SANTO DOMINGO.- The devastating earthquake of January 12 claimed the lives of around 400 Dominicans, mostly residents and businesspersons in Port-au-Prince.

The figure is from Miguel Martinez Molina, president of the Association of Dominican Residents in Haiti (ADDREH), who said his wife Margarita and their two young daughters were in their home in the sector Route de Freres, when the quake hit.

Martinez, 50, described the situation during the horrific four minutes he and his family went through at the time of the earthquake. “I had to go back into the house to get my wife and daughters out.”

“We were a little tired so we decided not to go to the Caribbean supermarket, which collapsed and in which dozens of people died trapped inside. The wounded were coming out onto the street from the neighboring residences,” he said in an interview for news source diariolibre.com.

Narrating just one of the many stories of horror, Martinez said he heard screaming from the neighbors and motorists who had to abandon their vehicles in the street and continue on foot as the rubble blocked traffic.

He added that Haiti is home to around 15,000 Dominicans, of which the ADDREH groups 600.

I read that as many as 2,000 Dominicans "ladies of the night" that were working in the downtown area of PAP, died as well. Do these don't count in the statistics? Are we so puritan about they kind of business that they were in, as to not even acknowledge them?
Dominican women that participate in the oldest profession are also human beings, and should be treated as such, not shunned like animals.

I don't think a quake in the DR would had killed that many.

In the 2003 Santiago Quake there was one person dead.
