Bogota. - The Government of Colombia expressed its gratitude to Dominican Republic chief executive Leonel Fernandez, for his mediation to ease the strained relations between Bogota and Caracas.

In a statement president Alvaro Uribe "appreciates" Fernandez’s "willingness to advance in the mechanism agreed to in the recent summit in Cancún, Mexico, by the group of nation friends to spur talks between Colombia and Venezuela."

Fernandez heads the group of countries -Dominican Republic, Mexico and Brazil- which formed to seek a discussion between Hugo Chavez and Alvaro Uribe, in the Rio Group Summit.

Bogota also reiterates its “willingness for a dialogue with Venezuela in a framework of respect and without affecting the national dignity" and notes that "aimed at advancing in that mechanism, “the Dominican president visited Colombia last weekend and went to the Colombia-Venezuela border.

In yet another statement, from Santo Domingo, the Dominican Government said it regrets Venezuela’s "unease" for Fernandez’s mediation in that country’s conflict with Colombia and, despite to inform Caracas on the steps taken, without receiving a response.

Alvaro Uribe is one of the most impresive Latin American president to come along in a long time. The fact that he stood toe to toe with the pinochio of our hesmiphere Chavez is a testament of this man character. Unlike our own Leonel who can swim in the most shark infested water posible and come out alive.

More info. on the NARCO MIDGET

CONVIVIR

Within his jurisdiction, Governor Uribe openly supported a national program of cooperative neighborhood watch groups that became known as CONVIVIR, which had been created by a 11 February 1994 decree of Colombia's Ministry of Defense.[citation needed] The groups quickly became controversial – while some reportedly improved security in communities and intelligence coordination with the military, their members were accused of abusing civilians and operated without serious oversight. In 1998, Human Rights Watch stated: "we have received credible information that indicated that the CONVIVIR groups of the Middle Magdalena and of the southern Cesar regions were directed by known paramilitaries and had threatened to assassinate Colombians that were considered as guerrilla sympathizers or which rejected joining the cooperative groups".[7][8]

After much political debate, in November 1997 the Colombian Constitutional Court ruled that CONVIVIR members could not gather intelligence information or use military-grade weapons; other restrictions included more legal supervision. 237 restricted weapons were returned to authorities by the end of 1997. In early 1998, dozens of groups had their licenses revoked because they did not turn in their weapons or information about their personnel. Due to these measures, some gradually turned in weapons and phased themselves out. Other members did not comply and later joined paramilitary groups such as the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC).[9]

MEMO to Leonel,

Stay out of other people's business and take care of your own first. Let Colombia and Venezuela settle their dispute and you should stick to handling our internal issues (i.e Drug trafficking, unemployment level, Education and getting rid of all the scumbags you have around you).

Sincerely,

One of the few people in this forum that actually thinks you are a good president.

Josean,
Your hero is now flying to Syria with an olive branch in his mouth and you will have the honors of handing him the Nobel peace prize after he solves the crisis in the middle east . In the mean time , Vacanos will be overseeing the highway department back on the island while making sure those potholes are getting filled as fast as he can educate the Dominicans to spell electricity ..

Leonel Fernández was asked to mediate in the conflict by Álvaro Uribe and Hugo Chávez knew about it too, now with his (Chávez's) usual cynicism, Hugo Chávez acts like he didn't know anything about it. Álvaro Uribe thanked Leonel Fernández for accepting the invitation to mediate in the conflict.

Hugo Chávez is a joke, but the left considers him and Castro the best. Tomorrow Sebastián Piñera will take office in Chile, just a few days after the earthquake in that country. I have no doubt that Piñera will do a much better job for his country in one term than what Castro has done in 50 years for Cuba and Chávez in over 10 years for Venezuela.

It's really something, that people in this forum are out of focus and careless about the truth and instead choose the side that its in the wrong. It shows your fears of socialism. Uribe along with Fernandez are both traitors to LATIN AMERICA. Uribe wants the U.S. armed forces in its terretories and what does that say to its neighbors, now lets suppose that there were another major power and that power were to say that it will open seven military bases in Venezuela. What will you think will happen? The new form of SOCIALISM as being put forward in Venezuela is a good example for all of LATIN AMERICA. The changes there are for the good of the majority instead of a minority which are the ones who were controlling the true wealth of the country. As a member of the group ALBA along with its others members are demonstrating to the U.S. that Latin American countries can work together in unity and this causes more concerned and fears. Their strategies is to undermine such efforts and

to distabilize these nations and show that they are incompetent and need the U.S. as an example. There can only be one example in this hemisphere and that is the U.S., there can only be one leader that will lead all other and that is the U.S.
