NEW YORK. - The plight of the Dominican Yubelkis Vargas, 40, who weighs more than 1,000 pounds as the result of chronic obesity, has been made public by Hispanic television networks in the United States.
The woman, who has been bedridden since October 2009, asked in an interview from the Buenos Aires de Herrera sector, where she lives with her father, asked the authorities to help her in her misfortune.
Yesterday the philanthropist physician Antonio Cruz Jiminián said he would assume Vargas’ case and vowed that she’ll soon begin to recover.
The story stirred the curiosity and prompted commentaries from dozens of Dominicans who saw in on television.
So far the most known and impressive chronic obesity case in the United States doesn’t exceed 500 pounds.
The world’s most obese woman was Carol Yager, who died in 1994, weighing 1,450 pounds and the most obese man was Jon Brower Minnoch, who died in 1983 weighing around 650 pounds, after managing to lose more than half his original weight.

How did President Phot OP miss this chance to get his picture in the paper? Maybe he was too busy sucking up to some foreign "investor" or out of work movie star. It often seems that LF is practicing for a job as a receptionist, when his term is over. I have never seen anyone so anxious to have his picture taken meeting so many unimportant people.

I really don't understand how can a human being get to this level.

More on the good Doctor!
Tuesday, January 30, 2007
This morning we drove into the heart of Santo Domingo . Turning off a small city street, we pulled into the Cruz Jiminian Foundation Hospital to meet Dr. Cruz Jiminian. Unlike most medical centers and hospitals in Santo Domingo , Dr. Jiminian’s medical center is not located in a medical niche of the city. Instead it is located in a poor residential region isolated from any other medical clinic or hospital.
With a staff of over 100, the hospital is in constant activity. The patients treated at this hospital come from the most impoverished sectors of Santo Domingo seeking care that they would not be able to receive free of charge or at a very reduced cost elsewhere in the country.
As we stood in the driveway waiting for Dr. Jiminian to meet us, it was apparent that this hospital served a large population and was the main source of care for the surrounding community.

People were constantly moving in and out of the hospital, and there was a recognizable sense of urgency around the building. Dr. Jiminian greeted us quickly and took us to a large courtyard, packed with elderly citizens, families, and school children, where a 95-year-old woman was being honored for her contribution to the improvement of human rights of impoverished communities in the Dominican Republic . Direct Relief and Food for the Poor were also recognized at this event for the donations of pharmaceuticals, nutritional supplements, and medical supplies given to the hospital.
Dr. Jiminian is well known in the Dominican Republic for the incredible contribution he makes to his community. A very energetic and charismatic man, he does the work of 10 people at once. His hospital provides free or reduced cost services to working populations, in particular providing corrective surgeries for children born with deformities.

He told us later he performs two to three such surgeries for cleft pallets and external growths each day. He also has a feeding program for the elderly which provides meals for up to 200 people, which he personally overseas. His hospital also provides free TB, lab, and immunization services.

I watched a documentary not long ago about a man in Monterrey, Mexico who is facing the same challenges that Yubelkis, but Manuel Uribe seems to be much far advanced in his recovery as he's being sponsored by Televisa. There is a lot to read on the internet about him, his diet and process to take him out of that difficult situation. If it may be useful to anyone willing to help Yubelkis, here is the link:
