BERLIN.- Dominican Republic’s tourism industry’s weathered the 2009 crisis with a 0.32 percent growth in arrivals while 2010 appears "promising for tourism" by promoting the "Dominicans’ good nature."
Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia said today in Berlin’s International Tourism Bourse (ITB) that as far as tourism Dominican Republic is "the Caribbean region’s leader," and "we want to keep it that way."
He said the number of visitors to Dominican Republic in the first month rose 5.85 percent than the same month last year. "They are more than good figures for tourism, in the days of crisis, when many foreign companies risked investing in the sector within Dominican borders.”
Garcia said the Government also made efforts and established plans to build infrastructure in the major tourist regions to contribute to the sector’s development.
He cited the five months of work so far on the Coral Highway, to link Punta Cana with Santo Domingo, while work continues on the Tourist Boulevard of the Atlantic, to link Samaná with different towns along the Atlantic coast.
The official also noted the work to improve and pave roadways in Punta Cana, Bavaro Beach, Puerto Plata and Boca Chica.
“After having met with European and Canadian tour operators and diverse hotel chains, all agree that 2010 will be a promissory year for the Republic," Garcia said.

Not for the tourists that do not stay in an all inclusive hotel.
There tourists only meet the working Dominican.
Any where else (even gated communities) you have to be behind bars in your house or you will be robbed.
Pathetic.

I do not think the rate of robbery is high compared with other countries - e.g. SD compared with NYC, Miami, London, Paris, Rio etc.
Jobs are a problem - government needs to create more jobs - preferably green jobs - but also control the media so the expectations of a millionaire lifestyle becomes less prevalent. Also reduce ostentatious wealth display by those in public life and in well paid government jobs. .e.g. is there a need for a politician to arrive by helicopter etc.

abc200, You are so wrong.
In most US suburbs you do not need bars on your doors and windows.
In the DR EVERY house needs bars on doors and windows or you WILL get robbed. Even with bars I've been robbed.
Dominicans have the entitlement gene. They think you are rich so it is OK to steal and rob from you.
No F..en conscious or shame.

Here a great example.
You must have read about the bus in SD that the driver died of a heart attack and the bus went in the ocean.
A Dominican 24 year old dove into the water and saved people. He put his life at risk for people he did not know.
While he was doing this heroic act someone stole his motorcycle.
What kind of mentality does it take to do something that heinous.

And the higher type communities have a monthly cost that is WAY out of line.

In most suburb it is usual to have a Brinks ore equivalent home security system and alarm - nearly every house in large parts of the US worth over 1million dollars has one. Ditto London. Also US houses often have 'safe' inner areas people can retreat to.
Because the climate and custom people dine on the patio a lot and also leave furniture etc. outside.
So if the area faces the street etc. and there is no perimeter fences as is usual in US houses a steel grill is an economic way to go.
In any developing country police are not likely to be as efficient as the best areas in developed countries plus there is often the need to leave windows open rather than have heating/air con so bars although they have negative connotations I agree are the way to go. Precise statistics are hard to come by but for my small apartment in London insurance was 300 dollars a year. One condition was that items over 1200 dollars needed to be itemized separately with appropriate adjustment in premium

New York State homeowners pay on average 869 dollars a year in insurance for home.
http://www.houseinsurancerates.co....k-homeowners-insurance-guide.htmlIf half of this is for theft and possessions are similar TV, Hi-Fi, Cooker, Fridge, Furniture worth 3000 dollars and you do not have a break in over a long period you more than break even.
Gated community charges vary but in Florida total for a 1 million dollar house including taxes, amenity charges, water, sewerage, waste grounds maintenance are about 40,000 dollars a year would be typical.
5000 dollars a year would often be the case in the DR. For a simple 1200 sq ft villa 200 dollars.
Including grounds, pool, 24 hour security water, drainage wi-fi, waste disposal etc.
