A booming business.

Santo Domingo.- The economic boon of Major League Baseball (MLB) teams’ currently spending of around US$70 million per year to run their academies and to sign  young players, in addition to creating more than 1,000 direct jobs may vanish as the scandals of banned substances, document forgery and the uncontrolled fraud against the prospects flourish.

It’s a scenario the major leagues want to leave in the past for which it tapped one of its top most prestigious management aces to spur the deep changes the professional sport needs.

Enter Sandy Alderson before the Dominican media.

Although he didn’t detail his formula to eradicate the problem, he did make it quite clear that Major League Baseball’ increased spending and bolstered human resources will lead to guidelines being drawn for the country.

Guidelines?

Are they anything like rules or laws? Those aren't observed here, why should anyone observe guidelines?

It's about time. But then again look at all the crap some players have pulled in the past. Finally, let's see what this will lead to.

This is a great move by MLB. They have the clout to demand fundamental changes or will decrease their involvement in DR and seek out another venue for their academies. As with many other aspects of life in DR, the sports sector is behind the times in organization and professional standards. But with greater regional and international integration the DR and all its sectors are being forced to adopt, forcibly perhaps, but nevertheless so to better standards. In the end all dominicans stand to gain from this movement. It's chaotic and corrupt and appears unworkable, but what has happened during the last twenty years or so, from an historical perspective, is impressive. The glaring failures(education, sanitation, water & electrical, health) become ever more so because they are compared with other developments that appear to signal arrived modernization standards. But this next stage of expansion may bring about that hoped for consolidation of modern standards in the DR.
