Letter to Leonel Fernandez, President the PLD party and Carlos Morales Troncoso, President of the PRSC party:

Distinguished gentlemen: We the representative organizations of Cabarete want to draw your attention to the current efforts by the local leaders of your respective parties to present to our community the candidacy of Gabriel Mora, better known Canoa, to head the Municipal District Board.

Said gentleman, after depredating the Cabarete lagoon (a protected area) for years, was finally stopped from filling areas of the lagoon to sell it as lots in December 2008.

After much wavering and attempts to evade the celebration of the case in court it was sent to trial in January 2010.

Moreover although Canoa is a councilman in the municipality Sosúa, he has acted as director of the Municipal District Board of Cabarete, where despite managing numerous resources, that organization has not invested one cent in infrastructure and municipal services.

That Board has the ominous privilege of being the only one which has privatized the Municipal Treasury via a contract with pirate businesspersons who demand exorbitant taxes from the citizens and companies.

The community finally confronted this anomalous situation and faced with the scandal that this caused, the contract "disappeared."

In 2005 the Accounts Chamber audited the District Board’s tenure headed by Canoa in 2004. The auditors found numerous irregularities and showed the embezzlement of funds to the community.

For unexplained reasons this report remained as "provisional" because the process of arbitration with the municipal officials responsible for said irregularities never concluded.

We the citizens and organizations of Cabarete don’t deserve that two of the most important parties in the country present to the voters as a candidate a person with these credentials to lead our District.

Is it perhaps that the PRSC and the PLD don’t have in their rank-and-file honorable citizens who respect the law and are able to honestly lead our municipality?

The community of Cabarete deserves better treatment and your personal consideration and of the organisms of both parties. We have constructed a tourist community which Dominican society can feel proud of.

We don’t seek recognition for this contribution and instead aspire to being treated with respect.
