SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Government today rejected as "unfair and little objective" Washington’s report calling corruption an ill shared by it’s law enforcement agencies, which threatens the respect for human rights in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The Presidency’s Chief of Staff Cesar Pina said the reason behind the United States’ so many efforts to supervise other countries affairs without looking inward is disturbing. "They then proceed to this information which isn’t sufficiently objective. They are qualifications by people unaware of the national reality and who knows with what interest."

The official however said the report has elements which must be stressed such as the fact that the Dominican State has been making an effort to overcome the vices and irregularities in the police system.

"As always I reserve to recognize any authority of the United States, not only because it’s a foreign problem, but in light of its eagerness to audit the rest of the societies an intention of cooperation is also noticed."

I agree in principle with the results of the study. However, as always, the issues are not a easy to flesh out... There is MASSIVE corruption in DR; that is no secret. The question is how long before it gets rooted out, if ever? The reaction by DR government is very predictable as it seeks to attack the messenger instead of discussing the possible solutions. As far as the US meddling, who are we kidding? Without their aid and economy/trade, DR would be Haiti. The real embarassment should be that our governemnt is so corrupt and nothing really gets done about it. So if it takes a foreign nation to serve as an aganet of change for DR, so be it. God knows these crooks in power will never relinquish power and corruption on their own.

I am supportive of an external auditing agency and a world regulatory body to work with world developing nations to help improve their democratic system, but this role belongs to institutions such as the UN; what the US is doing is getting into a sovereign nation's business. If the US is so concerned about human rights, then they shoud focus on working on their own issues at Guantanamo base and with Arizona's rednecks shooting at illegal aliens entering the country.
The Haitian issue has to be managed carefully and thoroughly as it represents a huge economical burden and a threat to Dominican sovereignty.

people please i have to tel you that if a person don't get ahead is because they own lack of desire. what the Haitian need is they own people to be willing to educate and motivate them to do something about they problems. because Dominican republic do not have the obligation or the income to fix that. unless Washington give it to LF. do they want to take the island and give it to then? the France are the one ho have to do more ,because they are the one that in good time had taking advantages of Haiti.

judging from the content of MS Jersey´s postings, he or she has no further drugs left to share, having used them all. and yes, just look at what is happening in the political silly season. half the country is a candidate for one or the other political position, and the other half is hanging on to the coattails of a candidaite for one of the million posts. so, come the end of May, out goes the old, in comes the new, and the botella jobs will change hands. when things keep going down the crapper, there is always the old USA to blame for the malaise. a lot of the grumbling and discontent probably takes place in the line at the Consulate, as everyone struggles for the visa to the bad old uncle.

LIE-onel Ferandez makes Trujillo Proud!

Third, HOW DARE US talk about human rights when they are killing some part of their citizens in jails (by taking away people's life by incarcerating them and dehumanizing-destroy the ability for these people to work "Survive").
