Santo Domingo.– The National Statistics Office (ONE) director Pablo Tactuk said the 11th National Population and Housing Census is expected to count 10 million people and visit 2,500,000 houses.

According to Tactuck, the census, scheduled for late October with a cost of RD$600 million, would take a week to carry out and will recruit 56,000 census takers. The previous census took two days to complete.

Everything is getting ready, Tactuk said. President Leonel Fernandez will announce the exact date through a decree, he added.

If you're a beach fan, go to Sosua. It has become apparent in recent weeks the insurge of hatian refugees showing up on the streets over there. Dressed poorly, most without any form of footwear and ripped clothes, I see locals and tourists concerned for their own safety by avoiding popular areas such as Pedro Clisante and indeed the main street near to Banco Popular.

I believe that by encouraging them to beg or by giving them "hand-outs" this will do nothing to solve the problem of having them on the streets and indeed encourage their relatives and friends to join them in the town.

It's only a matter of time before mugging and burglary start to increase at a time when Sosua needs all the good publicity it can get following recent incidents that include kidnapping.
What's the solution, genius?

No, you stop the PC drivel for once. You haven't exactly answered my question, what's the solution, genius? And no, those "best families" don't speak for the rest of us, the citizens on foot, which are importuned every day by those famine stricken mobs. A touristic country can't allow itself the luxury of having throngs of beggars pursuing everyone on sight without suffering some serious setbacks in the process, or dying a slow but painful economic death if nothing is done to solve the issue.

MS Jersey, you really should take time to pause before posting some of the rubbish you do. one suggestion is that you should not post under time constraints. should you have a fear of the boss catching you blogging on the job, then wait till you get home. haste makes waste. in your case, a waste of broadband. think before you hit the ¨post comment ¨key. get some intelligent friend, if you have any, to edit your comments. but please, do not make yourself look so asinine before the world. try to keep your ignorance a more closely guarded secret.

Buddy,

Whatever I say, I do without fear, Im sick of people like you, calling others ignorant just because I disagree with your kind, Mr/Ms intellectual, if you can take punches, don't say anything, and start calling names, grow some balls if you don't have any, this is not for wimps, or go back to everythinghaitian.com perhaps they would agree with your posting on that site.

i do not call you ignorant because you disagree with me. i call you ignorant because you are. i have posted extensively on the undesirable consequences of unfettered Haitian incursion into the DR, both the economic and social displacements which will result. i have also laid some of the blame where it belongs, upon disgraceful businessmen here, who seek to enrich themselves from the benefits of virtual slave labor. i have tried to do this in a purely social scientific fashion, commenting only on the realities. therefore, when medievals such as yourself make counterintuitive and neanderthal remarks, i feel a compulsion to excoriate their nonsense. instead of suggesting that i go to haitians .com, maybe you should go seek out some kindergarten website where your commentary would be more befitting of the 8 to 10 age group.

Hey,

You so smart, you can't figure out that Haitians come to DR on their on free will, perhaps you should advocate for them back home where the whole problem takes roots, you so smart you can figure that out? Hypothetically speaking, if you own a company, and a position for a job with two applicant, one Hatian, one Dominican, and the Haitian is gonna cost you half for the same job, same result, you hire the Dominican, right? I don't think so.
You too smart for this forum, leave it to dumb Dominicans like me and the rest of the 5th grader.

actually,l just about everyone who moves from one country to another does it on their own free will, since a country generally does not deport its own citizens. so, you get no brownie points for that revelation. secondly, they generally move to other countries or regions for economic reasons. some have other motivations, such as climate, but that is more insignificant. finally, gratefully, the forum also boasts several highly intelligent Dominicans, who make comments i learn from on a daily basis. the fact that YOU are dumb is peripheral to the issue.

Bonao,

That's a great point, but according to the Haitian crew, there was not african slaves in DR, they just disappear, and that every dark-skin Dominican is a Haitian.
I made a comment about the town where my mother grew up, where there was not people of color, which by the way is a fact, and I took a beating from the afro crew, as a matter of fact, I was there in 2007 and the only people of color in this town are the Haitian that work the field, the rest are Dominican families that know each other and have been there since their ancestors came from Spain.
I don't have a problem with people of color, or Haitians for that matter, but if they have a anti-Dominican agenda then that's a problem. One thing is human right, the other is a propaganda to discredit a whole nation, that's where 2 and 2 don't add up.
We have an open border, we provide free medical care for the Haitians, they get jobs without the proper documents, and all we get is a beating from everybody.
Back to my 5th.

Dread... I wouldn't know what to say, I don't remember the census in the DR... At least we can get a sound estimate; with the tragedy of that nation next to ours, I don't believe the current estimation that there are only 1,000,000 Haitians in the country... I have been hearing that for 10 years now and those numbers have not fluctuated, which is why I don’t believe what the government says, since they aren’t ready or unwilling to take action against the problem!

Maybe I missed the point of your question...

The yare always bad talking Dominicans and teh Dominican republic but yet the ystill enter the country by the thousands. Reading your post the problem of illegal Haitian migration in DR seems to be getting really out of control ,now tell me.Why is that your government seems to be def to this issue. Judging by your post it should not be a problem for your equivalent of ICE in America to do like their American counterparts do some times in LA and Miami just round up the wet backs. You are a sovereign nation and clearly have the right to defend your territory against illegal migration. clearly they should be as visible to the authorities as their are to you?

Thing is, Pat, is that like in the case of those american vigilante novels, the "authorities" are also a part of the problem. I fear that it will all come down to the people taking the authorities' role into their own hands, which in underdeveloped countries like ours traduces itself in mob justice. It seems that everything will end up in tears for all the parties involved.

Dominicans aren't a 20% of the US population as the haitians are on this country, and I'm being pretty conservative on my estimates. Also, the US is the world's sole superpower, despite the crisis, while the DR is a third world country. Why is it that you bleeding heart liberals always like to compare both countries, when the difference between them is like the one between the ant and the elephant? Did I miss something, the article was about the " Getting ready for the Census Count" not a problem with a particular group (Haitians) of people. Haitian people are part of the Dominican Republic population just like some Americans, Europeans and etc.

And tho many of you may not like it. Haitian people are married into lots of Dominican families and they do lots of hard work in and around the island that lazy Dominicans refuse to do.

I have also observed in my 4 year stay, THERE ARE MANY MORE POOR DOMINICAN BEGGARS ON THE STREETS OF D.R, THAN HAITIANS. I just don't think its a good thing when one race of people singles out another because of who they are. I wish we could stay on track WITH THE TOPIC MORE, when having an open discussion. Thanks

The major and LONELY and ONLY difference is that in USA, the Mexican immigrants represent a minute percentage number of USA population, and there are immigrants coming from all over the world. Compared to the Haitians in DR who are the overwhelmingly , disastrous, alarming monstrous number OF IMMIGRANTS COMING FROM ONE SINGLE COUNTRY AND WHO ARE coming from the financially and intelligently poorest country in this hemisphere.

Nothing will stop the exodus, just a wall.

I have a friend who like most people not living in the east coast, do not know much about the Caribbean nations, so she told me a friend living in the upper northwest went to DR in a cruise and got really depressed to see so many African looking kids and young women with small kids in rags and without shoes begging in the streets.

How embarrassed I was. At that moment I did not show my mad feelings but explained to her the situation with the Haitians AND EXPLAIN THESE VERY DARK AFRICAN LOOKING KIDS WERE NOT DOMINICANS BUT HAITIANS.

We need to stop this! WE can not afford to loose tourist clients who paid their money to see paradise but instead are presented with the worst and calamity.

poponlaburra,

The point is not the "quality" of the immigrant or the ability of the "host" country to absorb them.

The fundamental principle as in most social interaction is Economic. Simply there is a real need or manufactured by keeping the salaries low thus, providing a disincentive to the nationals for taking these jobs

If the Dominican government is serous about controlling its borders it should penalize those who higher this cheap labor with both crippling financial fines and devastating years of incarceration.

But guess what this activity is very lucrative to the very wealth and just like the own every thing else in the country, they own the government, so it isn’t going happen boys and girls!

Only when it is not profitable to hire Haitians will we stop hiring Haitians it’s a simple fact of life.

By the way, your point that US is larger so the proportion of illegal immigration is more manageable then begs the point as to why the richest most powerful nation in the world has not been able to stop it.

Because one of the most powerful forces in the world is the force of markets and the law of supply and demand rules them. So if you have demand for cheap labor they will come over, under or around any walls you build real or virtual.

Look at the so-called DRUG WAR with all the vigilance, penalties and risk to life and people still every day become involved because of the extraordinary profitability the demand generates.

So illegal immigration is the symptom; the disease is the unscrupulous businessmen and women that create the market for this labor with the support of their cohorts in the government.

Ponponlaburra - They are most likely Dominicans you idiot. What happened to all of the slaves sent to the Dominican Republic? How about the many slaves smuggled in from Curazao that weren't even counted on the censuses? Dominicans are a majority dark skinned mulatto people and always have been, Haitians mostly live along the borders.

Exactly Josean. It's sad how some Dominicans will automatically assume their compatriots are Haitians just by their skin color. Most of those black people that you assume are Haitians are Dominicans with spanish surnames, you're just mad that you're (light skinned people) a minority in your own country. Get out of the campo and see the real Dominican Republic.

You have the courage to do it.
In this time when the Dominican Republic is regarded as a developped country, when its leader is regarded as a stateman in the region called to solve conflicts and sove problems.
you come out spitting childish and ignorant garbages to take the country back to when it used to be a banana republic ruled by lunatics terrorizing its people

Ahole quote of the month!!

"im more dominican than any of you,"

So this ahole thinks that because he has AFRICAN blood somehow that makes him more DOMINICAN which by the way is in the Americas .The Africans were the last group to arrive but that is besides the point because any Dominican born of parents legally in the country is a Dominican whether his parents are Chinese,Japanese,Arab,European,West Indian and even LEGAL Haitians!!

Of course afronazis would not understand this and somehow think that Africans have more of a right to this island than others even though they were not even first or second on this island !

Again pitibacoa f you and your whole tribe if you want to destroy what Dominicans fought and died for which was to be free and independent and you and anyone who wants to unify with Haiti can renounce your citizenship immediately and join the paradise called Haiti which would be a dream a African pride!!

You are pond scum who doesn't deserve the title Dominican and who probably lives in some ghetto in the US and has "discovered" his afrocentricity while having no clue what being Dominican is.

Thank God most real Dominicans would slap you silly if you mentioned your idiotic "ideas" in person but that is why you are in Dominican Today because you probably can barely write in Spanish and view DR through your US ghetto racist prism yet you have the nerve to call people racists because we want our nation to be independent and because we don't ever want to be unified with the lowest of the low .
