NEW YORK. -- More than 30 years after he arrived with a group of guerrillas in a southwest beach the octogenarian Hamlet Hermann seems to still pose a threat to Washington’s security, which denied him a visa to introduce his book “Eslabon Perdido" (missing link) two weeks ago in New York.
Carlos Sanchez, Dominican Culture Commissioner in New York City hosted the Saturday night debut with an empty chair on stage to simulate Hermann’s presence, who in a video said he regretted his absence.
"I couldn’t be with you because of the obstacles of the remains of Bushism, but we’ll have the opportunity to be together," in reference to George W. Bush’s Administration, which adopted stricter measures against people and foreign institutions considered Washington’s "enemies."
The ex guerrilla, now 80, still figures in the State Department’s and the National Security Department’s black list and are denied visas prevent visits by those classified as a "terrorist.”
Hermann however was able to visit New York for the release of other books during that same Bush Administration, but using a Dominican Government diplomatic passport as an official, when he headed the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet).
The Culture Commissioner " patriotic groups and community leaders organized the activity and some affirmed that after denying the visa, U.S. embassy officials in Santo Domingo visited Hermann’s residence "to apologize for the inconvenience."

Washington will soon list themselves on their terrorist lists. I can only wish Washington would blacklist themselves from the country that belongs to Americans. Washington does NOT represent the American people.

80 years old? WOW!!! Unless it is a very old picture, he sure looks great for that age. He must have had one hell of a good life as a potential terrorist.
Anyway it just shows the continued incompetence of US authority, their inability to know and distinguish, what is a true terrorist from the rest. They just can't tell them apart, which indicates to me more then just a serious flaw, but rather a system that is in dire need for a major overhaul.

Mr. Hamlet Hermann was a Cuban trained guerilla fighter, that landed with Caamaño in the failed 1973 invasion at Caracoles.
The state department with good reason had him in the terrorist list, and it is his responsibility if he wants to travel to the US, to inquire if there are any impediments to his visit.
Instead of crying foul, he should have made efforts and due diligence, to have his name removed,
but maybe he calculated this way, he can get some free publicity for his book.
BTW I read the book and I thought he revealed very little of what hasn't been already published many times.

GEN-Thanks for your insight to this matter. Although I agree, and true he should have alerted the authorities about his visit, but as you indicated, it must have been a strategy, a marketing maneuver to sell his book.
Nevertheless, what surprised me most is why at age 80 and after all of these years, he was still on a terrorist list. Apparently the US does not go through a periodic review process to determine who stays and who doesn't. It seems as if they do not update their list of potential terrorists accordingly. This simply tells me that if they fail to remove old names, then it is likely they also fail to add new names in a timely manner as well.
The irony of the matter is the fact that while he was still considered to be a 'terrorist', he was able to travel to the US on a diplomatic passport, which further tells me that something is wrong, something here just does not jive.

I would hardly categorize anyone that actually attempted to dislodge a tyrant by force either a weanie or a whiner...this is a man who put his life on the line for his ideals. How many can say the same?

The invasion Hermann was involved in was in '73. Balaguer was the intended target. And Lincoln did govern at times like a tyrant, of that there is ample record. But that's another topic altogether.

From: United States, New York City
But what's in the eye of the beholder? That Balaguer was a tyrant? There is ample evidence that there was NO democracy during his initial twelve years, that the "cilvilian" government he presided over kept itself in power through sham elections and intimidation of the population (which inluded murder). Anyone that attempted to fight against such a state of things deserves to be commended by his countrymen and their children wherever they may find themselves. He is an example of Dominican heroism. I may not agree with his poltics but that the man is worthy of admiration is, in my mind, without a doubt.

"The US Government has been heavily criticized in some circles, especially in the context of the so-called "war on terror". International law, including the UN Security Council Resolution 1373 of September, 2001, states that countries should not give safe haven or any kind of assistance to people involved in present or past terrorist activities. The final declaration of the XIVth Ibero-American Summit, held in Salamanca in October 2005, includes a demand to "extradite or judge the man responsible for the terrorist blowing-up of a plane of Cubana Aviation in October 1976, which caused the death of 73 innocent civilians."
