Santo Domingo. - Several women’s business groups yesterday recognized the Diccia Pineda, the first Dominican and one of the first Latino judges to hold a bench in the State of New York’s Supreme Court.
In the touching ceremony held in Monday afternoon in the Thesauro Bookstore, the U.S. elected official shared her career experiences which the ladies which fills with price not only to the country’s women but all Dominicans, the organizers said.
The presidents of the Women Industrialists Federation Veronica Sención; of the Dominican Businesswomen Association, Mayra Holguín and Yanet Rodriguez, hailed Pineda’s efforts to overcome hurdles and for setting an example for women to reach their goals and important posts anywhere.
Pineda said every sacrifice yields benefits in life, as long as the efforts and dedication are the pillars for the goals to reach.
The women handed the N.Y. State Supreme Court Justice a plaque, books and several mementos from the various feminine federations.

Congratulations to Judge Pineda, I hope that my post is not taken in any way other than the desire to correct a contextual error. Judge Pineda is not the first Latina judge to serve on the New York State Supreme Court. That distinction was first served over 30 years ago in 1978. To this day I know of over 10 Latina New York State Supreme Court Justices that are currently serving or have served as judges in this court. I sent DT a list of the Latina Judges that preceded Judge Pineda when this same error was headlined two months or so ago. Judge Pineda is a source of honor to the Hispanic community in general and the Dominican community in particular, I highly doubt that she would be content to receive an inordinate attribution.

Thank you for the clarification, devin. I garauntee you, though, that your presentation of facts will be misconstrued, maybe deliberately so by someone with an ax to grind as happens so often on here.

No problem Cib, I hope that will not be the case but I know how things work around here. Don't be surprised if you too are vilified for rendering me support on the matter.
P.S. I find it a lot more enjoyable disagreeing with you than agreeing since disagreeing with you is far more entertaining. Thanks again.

Listen danny its only one Dominican but there are tons of other Dominicans which make all Dominicans proud. Starting by our world known designer Oscar De La Renta, our baseball players which make up the highest percentage of Latinos in the Major Leagues, Dominican Police Officers in NYC which also make up the highest number of Latino Officers in the big apple, our celebrities such as Charytin, Zoe Saldane and Michelle Rodriguez to name a few, Politicians in NYC such as Guillermo Linares and Dr. Eduardo J. Sanchez who was the Commissioner of Health for the State of Texas from 2001 to 2006 and not to mention that out of all Hispanics in NYC Dominicans make up the highest number of College Graduates. In NYC we make the largest percentage of latino business owners with our taxi bases, most of the Supermarkets are owned by Dominicans, Beauty Parlors, Bodegas, Accounting firms and Money transfer offices. These and many more things make us proud of coming from the Dominican Republic!

DT Editors,
I notice you have changed the headline for Ms. Pineda achievement but unfortunately it is still incorrect. If you wish to headline a first for Judge Pineda, your headline should read " ....JUDGE PINEDA, FIRST DOMINICAN BORN WOMAN IN NEW YORK STATE SUPREME COURT. Please note that the first New York State Supreme Court Justice of Dominican descent was Judge Faviola Soto who was born in NYC. The first Dominican born New York State Supreme Court Justice was Judge Rolando T. Acosta.
ojedamaggiolo80,
You correctly stated that Dominicans have had plenty of achievement in the U.S. Please pardon me for correcting two of your claims. Dominicans do not make up the largest group of Hispanics on the N.Y.P.D., your not even close on this one, nor do they make up the highest number of Hispanic college graduates in New York.
From: Dominican Republic
Devin11 Show me where it says different because as far as I know we do make up the largest latino group in the NYPD and yes we have the highest number of college graduates when compared to other latino communities in NYC. As far as danny goes, yes China and India are ahead of us in many aspects but we are fairly well positioned when compared to other latin american countries at our level meaning small countries like us (Central America). I never said we are perfect and yes we have a long way to go but we have been praised throughout the world by the IMF, The world bank, The United Nations and even recognized by Obama as a Latin American Leader Nation. This does not mean we are 1st world but atleast we know our economy is one of the fastest growing and healthy economy in Latin America. Coming from the country we were just 20 years ago yes we have achieved and accomplished so much on our own and it is something that every single Dominican should feel proud of.
From: Dominican Republic
As far as Dominicans wanting to go to NYC to sell drugs and prostitute themselves I do not know what kind of Dominicans you are use to being around here but I guarantee you that is not the majority of us here on the island. I only go to NYC for vacation and nothing else and there are so many others who are here working hard to get through college and get a degree to become productive citizens. Yes there are some who do sell drugs and there are many who get arrested but that is true for so many other citizens of many other countries ( you are generalizing). I can speak for what I see on my day to day life in the streets of Santo Domingo. I see hard working people who get up b4 the sun is up to make a living. I see many who come from far away campos to la UASD to get a degree and work in houses as maids to get through college. I see many who once were dirt poor and 20 years later have degrees, have successful lives and great families.
From: Dominican Republic
I see many who drive taxis, work in Zona Francas, work as maids, own businesses, work in Supermarkets and retail stores just to put food on the table. Ofcourse I also see some who are pests and should not be running freely around the city but those do not make up the majority of Dominicans. I as a Dominican living in the Dominican Republic must speak up and come out in defense of our people who are over all good, hard working people with desire to succede in life! If you are not proud of being Dominican, of your parents and grandparents and all they did that does not give you or anyone the right to generalize a whole race. I am very proud of being Dominican and so are the other 10 million living here!

Perhaps you are referencing this DT article that states "Number of Dominican cops lead NYPD’s foreign born officers...(1)
Of all the foreign born NYPD officers hired the highest amount of hires (263) were from the Dominican Republic, that is not the same as saying that most Hispanic officers in the NYPD are from the D.R. The NYPD is comprised of 25.6% Hispanic, 16.4% Black, 4.5% Asian and 53% White in the uniformed ranks. (2)
According to the New York Dominican Officers Organization (N.Y.D.O.) President Manuel Lantigua, there are over 1,010 NYPD officers of Dominican Descent in the uniformed ranks. (3)
There are over 39,000 uniformed officers in the NYPD 25% are Hispanic, almost 10,000, how do you then figure a majority with 1,010 or 10%.
P.S. It is the responsibility of the person making the claim to provide proof.

I guarantee you that is not the majority of Dominicans here in NYC either or anywhere in the world where Dominicans immigrate to. I don't know what Danny is refering to but that is not a fair or accurate portrayal of Dominicans anywhere. I think Danny just counts the bad and tosses out all the other figures and makes negative connotations about any positive Dominican news comming from any quarter.
From: Dominican Republic
Perhaps that was what I was referring still we are leading in foreign born NYPD officers and that makes me as a Dominican very proud. As far as Danny if that is the case I do not know what kind of Dominican does such a thing. I know we are not perfect and I know the Dominican Republic still has a long way and so does the great US of A and all the other countries around the world but we all have the responsibility to point out the negative and the positive aspects of all of our countries not just referring to DR. If I as a Dominican am not proud of it who will be? We must acknowledge the positive things to our Great country and work harder to change those that are not so positive instead of nagging about it. If one isnt happy with something about their country I always ask "What are you doing about it other than nagging?"
