SANTO DOMINGO.- A melee among bus drivers over the control of passenger routes claimed the lives of two new victims today Thursday in Villa Mella, the sprawling northern subdivision of Santo Domingo, local media report.
The deceased driver Apolinar Fortuna, 40, a member of the violent bus owners union Fenatrano, headed by Juan Hubieres, and his fare collector Freddy Jiménez, whose age wasn’t determined, were gunned down while other people were injured but whose status wasn’t divulged.
The clash between the drivers occurred at the bust stop in the corner of Hermanas Mirabal and Charles de Gaulle avenues, and although the Police have yet to issue a statement, it was learned that the suspected murderer headed Fenatrano’s local affiliate.

DR needs a Government run MTA with certified and inspected buses. A true MTA will provide jobs (Drivers, Route Supervisors, Mechanics, Tow Truck Drivers, Dispatchers, Office clerks-Accountant, parts department, Human resources, porters, marketing, etc...... lets not foget MTA POLICE)
This union Aholes should be charged with TREASON and murder because it was his driver that killed,. Implement the RICO ACT on this HOSE BAG.
If anyone gets in the way of the MTA should recieve a hefty fine and jail time. This nonsence has to stop.

There is no reason these people should be allowed to act like this. Our corrupt officials could care less about us and need to be replaced. LF needs to start addressing some of these important problems. Where are the police and military to stop this nonsense.

Ateo,
They are all Dominicans just like you and I who may have acted violently but they are just a systematic manifestation of the larger ills. Poor education, government corruption which when mixed together leads to disorganization and ultimately chaos, thus the violence.
When the government allegedly planned the METRO did they not realize that good or bad these men would resist being put out of the only jobs the probably can get. Did they not think it would have been better to consult the Dominican masses if this was a good idea, and if so get all the stake holders together so as to ameliorate the negative impact and gain support. Was that too much to ask?
However, the government officials who are as uncivil as these drivers only thought of the personal benefits to them, their party and their presidente: To the hell with the needs or rights of the majority.

So then these “gentlemen” will act in the same selfish way because that is the law of the Jungle we have created for ourselves.
No Dominican has the right to criticize if we allow this to happen, without speaking out!

If you don’t go to the cause, other “thugs” will replace them and ride in BMWs!
Thugs are everywhere!
El Tigueraje is the modus operandi of the Dominican government and most of the social order!

This is sad situation, as it mostly affects the "working class people", the ones who bear the heavy burden, work hard and are effectively left behind and forgotten.
Without safe, efficient and reliable transportation it would be just about impossible for DR to emerge into a competitive country like the one we wish for.
DR should look closely at other countries with good transportation attributes, emulate them; immediately would not be soon enough!
I am just about convinced that we must've had mass castrations in DR and testicular fortitude is lacking and no one is willing to take charge, effect necessary changes. Perhaps we've been rendered eunuchs!
