Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez yesterday analyzed Haiti’s situation with UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) director Jacques Diouf, who later told the press that the entity will buy 1,500 tons of seeds for short cycle crops from Dominican Republic, to plant during Haiti’s sowing season.

He said the FAO’s emergency program will give Haiti US$70 million for agriculture related areas and for reforestation. “We’ve also supported a long and short term program which involves US$800 million."

Diouf said before the earthquake 50% of Haiti’s population had inadequate nourishment, a situation worsened by the catastrophe.

According to FAO’s director agriculture accounts for 60% of that nation’s jobs and 80% of the people live in the countryside. “Naturally the situation is more serious as a result of the earthquake. I want to take the opportunity and thank the Dominican Republic for supporting its neighbor."

In that regard Agriculture minister Salvador Jiménez asked the donor countries to buy food from Dominican producers, so it reaches Haiti easily, and noted that the country has 45,000 tons of rice available.

He added that farming accounts for 90 % of the country’s jobs, a figure he affirms would rise in the few next days.

1,500 tons of seed for Haiti ? If unification is the ultimate goal, then I cant think of a better way to speed up the process than to encourage peaceful breeding between the Hatfields and the McCoys.

The DT article twice mentions that UN FAO, with $800M in the bank for Haiti, intends to "BUY" seeds from DR bourgeoisie. This will make harder for DR allies of US imperialism to misrepresent the transaction with language like "LF, what are you doing? There are hungry people in DR. They need seed too. Why don't get them some seeds. Don't take UN contract for 1,500 tons of seeds. Let the US imperialists, our masters, have this juicy UN contract."

It will be interesting to see what propaganda line the DR allies of US imperialism take on this deal.

First, UNESCO says "Hey LF, here's a university for 10,000 Haitian students." Now comes UN FAO and says "Hey LF, "SELL" us 1500 tons of seed for Haiti."

What's going on. What's going down. This seems too easy. Maybe the UN is trying set up LF. LF better watch out, because the UN is a tool of the utterly corrupt US imperialism.

This deal between UN FAO and DR shows that what was discussed at this week's donor meeting ... that is, how to spend the $2.2B ... has already been decided.

The US imperialists told UN to give FAO the Haitian recovery money ... about $800M ... for food.

They told the UN to give UNESCO an unspecified amount for education. Mostly likely, LF University will come out of this pool of money.

US imperialists told UN to give WHO a so far an unspecified amout for health care.

Evidently FAO already some degree of control over its $800M allocation.

So, the money comes from a US bank where UN has accounts to a Single Trust Fund which the US imperialists totally dominate. Then some of the money goes to these various specialized UN agencies ... FAO, UNESCO, WHO, etc. ... where imperialist thieves will steal as much as possible of the money.

US law commands the UN, an international organization, to distribute aid in a way that promotes the growth of the "private sector."

"One of the heaviest rainfalls since Haiti's Jan. 12 earthquake swamped homeless camps Friday, sweeping screaming residents into eddies of water, overflowing latrines and panicking thousands. The overnight downpour sent water coursing down the slopes of a former golf course that now serves as a temporary home for about 45,000 people. There were no reports of deaths in the camp, a town-size maze of blue, orange and silver tarps located behind the country club," AP reports today.

What is next?

Fortuna, the great Goddess of chance, whether we see Her as a spirit or as an objective rule of probability that exists and operates in the physical world, seems to be coming down hard on the Haitians.

In 1930s and 40s, She got the Zionists and commies. But today She is after the Haitians.

The other divine beings, if any, seem impotent before Her as She goes after the poor Haitians.

Fortuna, go get the rotten capitalists and imperialists. You would really enjoy getting them.

Fortuna, if you don't leave the Haitians alone, we gonna summon Lady Philosophy who kicked your behind in Boethius "The Consolation of Philosophy."

Fortuna, go listen to Frank Sinatra's "Luck Be A Lady Tonigh." No lady would treat the Haitians as you are doing.

Fortuna, how can we wake up the other divines, if there are any?

The Artibonite region is very fertile it is called the bread basket of Haiti. It used to produce enough rice to feed the whole country, until the early 80's when the IMF and World Bank came in and told Haiti to abandon its rice production in favor of the cheap subsidized rice imported from Miami(These were the expert,we all know the end of that story, mud cake anyone) Malawi got F$%^ck pretty bad too recently behind the same Dr order.

However in order for Haiti to produce enough food to feed its population agriculture must be modernize.

PS No Monsanto seeds please.

As stated before, LF and his people have established DR's priorities within the scope of the vast developmental project commencing in Haiti. If the figures prove true and anywhere near 10 billion dollars are pumped into Haiti within the next 3-5 years, DR stands to make a lot of business. LF is a smart guy and realizes that the best possible outcome for DR is a growing and prosperous Haiti. If Haiti should again fail to gain economic and political traction God save the DR, because the enormity of the Haitian collapse will be many fold worse than any suffered to date. I still question building the new university in Port au Prince, why not in Saint Marc? Haiti needs to spread out its main services or did the earthquake not make this point so painfully true?

------------------------------- ------

Competition is always good for the consumer, Digicel proved that ( service is so cheap everybody buys their ground keeper a cell phone). Also shows great corporate social responsibility, something new to our business sector. Vietel is buying Teleco. Think about what will happen when more multinationals come to Haiti.
The Haitian Elite got rid of Aristide because they did not want to pay taxes, but did not understand what it is in the era of globalization to be the last untapped market in the region.

The problem was never them but rather the lack of political stability in Haiti which made it a place only them, no outsider would want to invest which in term gave them total monopoly on the economy.

The challenge in Haiti is not just the lack of instruction in the arts and sciences, but the widespread absence of literacy. The official figures say 40% of the population is illiterate, but observers say illiteracy is as high as 60% in Haiti.

LF seems more interested in instruction in the arts and sciences than in combating illiteracy. So, LF wants to grow the middle class intelligentsia in Haiti. For the most part, the youth of the middle class are already literate.

US imperialists will likely let LF have some UN money for his Haitian university, but not on the grand scale ... 10,000 students ... LF envisions. Imperialists will fund something between 500 and 1000 students.

LF's idea about a new and big Haitian university is a good and sound idea even if its immediate aim is to grow an intelligentsia within the middle class, because the working class will also benefit from LF's idea.

The regional bourgeoisie and US imperialism have a problem with the Haitian intelligentsia.

Before the quake, about 25 non-Cuban-educated Haitian doctors per 100,000 people in Haiti. With 9M people, this means about 2,250 non-Cuban educated doctors in Haiti before the quake.

Most Haitian doctors live in Canada, US, and France.

Now, there are 1600 Cuban-educated doctors in Haiti, up from 400 at the time of Jan. 12 quake.
About 600 of the 1600 Cuban-educated doctors now in Haiti are Haitians. The Cubans are increasing the number of Haitians studying medicine in Cuba from the current 600 med students to about 1000 med students. So, when we exclude doctors in Haiti who are Cuban citizens, about 1 in 4 doctors [600/2250] in Haiti now are Cuban-educated. However, when we include doctors in Haiti who are Cuban citizens, about 1 in 2 doctors [1600/2250] in Haiti are Cuban-educated. The majority of Haitian doctors will be Cuban-educated in 6 or 7 years.

LF noticed the trend.

According to the UN, 70 percent of Haitians cook with kindling, thus forcing them to cut large parts of forests each year.

In addition, between 15 and 20 million trees are lost each year because no one cares about planting, and memories of exuberant vegetation in the country belong to the past.

Cutting of tress for kindling is not the only enemy of diminished Haitian forests, the burning of lands for crops also wipes out vegetation.

Mountains are gradually losing their entire verdant grove, and the same happens with river banks, with increasing landslides and floods, a situation that worsens with rains and hurricanes.

Analysts consider Haiti needs to plant over 200 million trees to increase the wooded surface by ten percent, but it entails large amount of money no one knows where it will come from.

US imperialists are plotting to steal billions in UN reconstrruction funds already collected.

With a proletarian state, these problems could be dealth with.
