Santo Domingo.- The Central Electoral (JCE) will meet today to hear an extensive agenda including 34 challenges as well as requests for revision, correction and verification, and will review the congressional candidacies registered, to admit or reject them.

Of the cases 11 are in the opposition PRD party, nine in the ruling PLD, eight in its ally the PRSC, and two for the minority ASD and PRI parties.

The Electoral court will decide only on candidacies for senators and deputies, because the 155 Electoral Boards in each municipal jurisdiction are responsible for those of mayors and councilpersons.

The deadline to challenge candidacies expires tomorrow, when the JCE Plenary and local Electoral Boards must issue their rulings on whether those registered admit or not. Law 275-97 stipulates that 24 hours later, the JCE and the JE will have to issue the Resolution on the Admission of Candidacies.

Right to revision

JCE Arbitration Chamber judge Eddy Olivares, quoted by news source diariolibre.com, said the people who disagree with its decision at the congressional level, can resort to a revision.

Will this be handled judiciously and with ethics or as just another opportunity to make a buck

Elelis Peña a candidate that was chosen by the people of Santo Domingo Oeste to run for Diputado in the PRD party. Then he was replaced by another candidate that the party wanted to put in his place. That is not a fair election process and will leave the people without their choice for Diputado. Elelis Peña has been a loyal member of the PRD for over 35 years. Still the PRD has abandoned him. If this is what the PRD does to a loyal candidate, what can the poor and middle class of Santo Domingo Oeste expect from the PRD ? The PRD party has no integrity and will lose even more power after this election. Santo Domingo needs election reform and needs to allow for independent candidates to be able to run for office. The people of Santo Domingo deserve better then what they have now. Journalists Jose Acosta
