Santo Domingo.- The reported resignation last night to the candidate to Mayor of Santo Domingo East may signal similar actions in Dominican Republic’s major opposition party, PRD, faced with overwhelming possibilities of the tickets of the ruling party PLD in the May 16 elections.

The PRD’s Tonty Rutinel Domínguez is said to be disgruntled with the candidates imposed to the Santo Domingo East City Council, with whom in his view make it impossible to manage that municipality.

The Web site oriental.com published the as yet unconfirmed information, although a Domínguez assistant contacted by news source diariolibre.com said a solution to the conflict was being sought.

Elelis Peña a candidate that was chosen by the people of Santo Domingo Oeste to run for Diputado in the PRD party. Then he was replaced by another candidate that the party wanted to put in his place. That is not a fair election process and will leave the people without their choice for Diputado. Elelis Peña has been a loyal member of the PRD for over 35 years. Still the PRD has abandoned him. If this is what the PRD does to a loyal member/candidate, what can the poor and middle class of Santo Domingo Oeste expect from the PRD ? The PRD party has no integrity and will lose even more power after this election. Santo Domingo needs election reform and needs to allow for independent candidates to be able to run for office. The people of Santo Domingo deserve better then what they have now. Journalists Jose Acosta
