Pablo Escobar, Quirino Paulino.
Santo Domingo.- Three decades of complicities and silence has protected and paved the way for drug trafficking’s unfettered evolution in Dominican Republic, from providing a bridge for international rings to forging an operational structure between the 1980s and 1990s.
It’s consolidation in the last decade created an internal market and local networks which with macro and micro traffic permeated all social strata.
Colombian, Venezuelan, Puerto Rican, Spanish drug lords established links in the country, penetrating economic, political and social groups and recruited key allies even in Dominican Republic’s National Police and Armed Forces, to operate with very few fissures, sporadic denunciations, and the occasional arrest for many years.
Impunity opened the doors to the most unprecedented crimes, from spectacular sums of laundered money to even routine contract killings.
Drug trafficking’s advance without major hurdles has created fabulous fortunes, contributing to the boom of the 1990s, as its laundered money seeped into the banks, invigorated the real estate sector and construction industries, while tainting the economy with the billions of dollars invested in ostensibly prosperous businesses, villas and mansions, and the streets filled of SUVs.

Drug money takes root in Dominican economy......It is becoming a tree
From: Dominican Republic, NEVER FORGOTTEN, NEVER FORSAKEN!
I totally condemn any criminal activity, which only purpose is to destroy or affect in a negative way, every segment of society. The drug trafficking is in the TOP of the list, affecting the lives of those that have been lured by its commercialization, or by its consumption.
Supply and Demand is the most fudamental concept of economics, actually, the backbone of market economy; and if we have the US of A as the number one market in the world, those who commercialize with drugs will always SUPPLY it to us. As important as it is to persecute those supplying drugs, it is also important to educate our society about the dangers of drugs, othewise the DEMAND will always be there.

What´s better for an economy? Having a huge cashflow on the streets, with the trickle down effect, or having the banks and trusts monopolizing the wealth through registered retirement savings plans and the like, or the Central Bank demonetizing in order to keep the peso artificially high?
Money is not dirty. Some hands that manipulate it are.
It might as well be on the street, creating jobs and impulsing economic growth than stuck in mutual funds or worse, subprime loans.

Interdiction doesn't work. It just creates a funding source for corrupt officials and their thug masters. Decriminalization, strict regulation (ala cig's, tobacco, pharma's) and taxation has got to be worth a try. If the textbook definition of insanity is doing the same thing the same way over and over and expecting different results then we need to re-evaluate our processes. 1/10th of the money we waste on interdiction could provide adequate funding for education and treatment.
You can spend a little money nurturing a child or you can spend a lot trying to catch the criminal he will become without it.

If our officials weren't so transparently corrupt the traffickers couldn't operate as freely as they have and currently do. To the rest of the world they could really care less what we do on the island and used to just laugh at us for being like children. Now with all the drugs coming through effecting them they now have an interest. Now they see how much problems we have with our corrupt government and how easily the drug money has changed the country in the last 20 years. Most of our leaders have sold us out for money. This is obvious. Now we also look ridiculous to the rest of the world by how easily drug dealers can operate freely in our country. They also see how our laws are not enforced equally by any means.

I watch a video the other day of an execution done by the Zetas ( a mexican drug cartel enforcement squad). Believe me when I tell you Al-Quaeda has nothing on these guys. I know I keep repeating myself but if we aren't careful the Dominican Republic will soon follow in line with Juarez, Mexico. We should not make any distinction between the actual traffickers and those corrupt policitians and military personel that harbor them. I know I sounded like W in that last sentence, but we need to not follow the norm to eradicate this problem.

Dr's GDP went from U.S $9billion to U.S $90billion in less than ten years. Yes drugs are bad for society; but we are a transhipment point; not a consuming nation like the U.S and E.U. As long as we don't 'get high from our own supply' I said to each its own.
We gotta use what we have to get what we need.

sadly, but true, if it was not for the Drugs the Dominican economy would be very different today...

Holy carbonpaper! This is exactly what happened in Mexico ten years ago! They had a similar philosophy (let the gringos kill themselves and make us rich). Then the DEA drew a bottleneck on the supply lines and the dealers had to unload their backed up inventory on the Mexican populace, creating new markets for a product with a shelf life. They had made consumption commitments on the supply end and the few who attempted to renegotiate were replaced. Eliminated, then replaced. Within a year the use of cocaine within Mexico, especially among school age children grew by an order of magnitude (as their GDP had earlier).
Mexico's current problems,,,no change that to near anarchy...stemmed from the aforementioned attitude. Do not allow this to happen in the D.R.

Luxury apartments, luxury cars, cabanas, .......all over in DR and you can see them.
How could people make millions US dollars in DR in short period of times? ???? The answer is:
If the government officials are not blind, then they are idiots.
If they are not idiots, then then are in the game.
If they are not in the game, they will never ever afford the luxury apartment, car, and deposits of US dollars.
Because the government allows this happen, so what can you say? The top officials are the most shameless personnel......... it is true and fact....... they are come solo.......

While seen as an enemy of the United States and Colombian governments, Escobar was a hero to many in Medellín; he was a natural at public relations and he worked to create goodwill among Colombia's poor. A lifelong sports fan, he was credited with building football stadiums and sponsoring little league football teams in the city. Pablo Escobar was also responsible for the construction of many churches in Medellin gaining popularity inside the local Roman Catholic Church. He worked hard to cultivate his Robin Hood image and frequently distributed money to the poor. He would also build houses for the poor, gaining followers on his way. The population of Medellín often helped Escobar by serving as lookouts, hiding information from the authorities, or doing whatever else they could do to protect him.

Believe it or not its the drug money that keeps the Caribbean basin region afloat. The phenomenon of major GDP influxes as drug flow increase is not something new. Years ago I saw an interview with Micheal Manley The ex Prime Minister of Jamaica. To my surprise on the subject of drugs in the region,he stated at times when the economy was bad transhipment countries like Jamaica,Mexico and others had no choice but to let the drugs flow. In the case of Jamaica as per him marijuana was simply their cash crop.
PS. Do you think its by accident while there is a major rebuilding effort going on in Afghanistan its became the world largest supplies of heroin to the world. Hamid Karzai brother is knee deep in that trade why the DEA is not locking him up?
