Santo Domingo. - Four tremors shook the country in just eight hours as the Santo Domingo State University (UASD) Seismology Institute cautions that others, called micro-quakes, may occur in the next hours.
UASD seismologist Felix Marte said the population shouldn’t fear tremors and remain calm, because they are normal, though constantly monitored.
The quakes occurred at 10:53 Sunday night, one of magnitude 4.6 at 19.6 North latitude by 60.9 West longitude, 10 kilometers in depth, felt in the Cibao’s north-central and northwest towns Mao, Santiago, San Francisco, Puerto Plata. The second and third were aftershocks, the first of 3.3 magnitude at 11:02 p.m., and of 3.2, at 12:01 a.m., in that region.
The fourth quake occurred at 7:24 a.m., a 3.7 magnitude, at 18.7 North latitude and 69.6 West longitude, 95 kilometers deep, in Monte Plata province (east).
The micro-quakes at Mao were catalogued as tremors, for which four events occurred from one day to the next, the UASD Seismology Institute said.

Do not buy cement blocks from Haiti... Most are made in someone's back yard! Low quality blocks + little to no rebars + bad construction is why the quake was so big in Haiti

A 7.9 would knock down some buildings. All of those should have not just collapsed so easy... Bad concrete blocks had some part in the breaking...
Didn't you see the video of the guys that make the blocks in their back yards? I am sure that they were not following the correct guidelines a a block factory

Actually these small tremors are very good news, meaning that the tectonic plates are realigning and releasing pressure gradually, without major damages ground level, other than the usual scares.

dont worry all the buildings in the dr are very safe. ok most of them are built by the haitians..... but again dont worry we have in the dr the best inspectors that check the building's.

Low quality blocks = Low quality construction methods. 90% of construction projects in DR cannot even get insurance due to poor construction methods, materials, and poor cement mixes. Just wait; anything over four stories will be destroyed. The Metro will be a remembrance.

Reality is theres another factor........high crime such as theft / robbery and GOD forbid more future drug related crime [Tigres amock].
Many Dominicans who can afford it bar their windows and doors, some even with alarms and armed guards.
Example #1
Cancun, Mexico where the fear of drug related violence has had a negetive impact on tourism.
Example #2
A Friend of mine and his Family 4 years ago vacationed in the DR at La Romana for the first time and later told me he felt unsafe as a tourist, and for a little more he would rather vacation and feel safe in Hawaii........he never returned to the DR to this day.
Let's face it nobody wants to go on vacation to be victimized by crime.....could the DR be next ?
