Santo Domingo.- The authorities at INTEC University in Santo Domingo say that their students will patent at least six new inventions in 2012.

The innovations include a new camping tent design, which includes the option of adding and removing “rooms”, a mobile water purifier and a special device for helping people with vision problems.

The students presented these three projects at the 2009 Intec-nología fair, held in November.

According to the vice-rector for Research, Julio Sánchez Mariñez, the stress on innovation cuts across all the academic courses, especially engineering, and that INTEC works with the National Intellectual Property Office (Onapi).

At a luncheon meeting hosted by the university, Sánchez Mariñez stated that the aim of the patented inventions at Intec was to encourage the students’ entrepreneurial and inventive skills.

Intec recently introduced a Business Plan optional subject.

trust me on this one...if any of those inventions will be for devices which , if sold to the public will cut into the profits of the oligarchs, they are dead in the water. the DR does not suffer from a lack of creativity and know how among the younger generation. the progress is being held back by lazy, useless, backward drones who only know how to import things and add their profit margins. they are too short sighted to invest in the youth and their future. these guys will probably take these inventions to a foreign country, and some guy from Europe will be a major beneficiary of local talents.

All the sexual tourists to jail !!! Specially those who LOVEEE young girls and boys.

It's sad you don't know yet your true enemies : Goverment corruption (this is why there are so much illegal immigrants ); These illegal immigrants improve your national income gross ( cheap labor in the sugar plantations and in building businesses) ; Governement top officials' money stealing ( millions of USD) ; Huge debts ; Poverty, Ignorance ( no good education), Drug cartels, and Many Gringos rapers.

Many old gringos from France, Germany , USA, Canada etc are retired in your country BECAUSE there is many young and beautiful young girls who worship money because of the DR poverty. So they marry these old men in order to have food and a better life. As they say " la vida aqui esta el infierno".

Hey Nehesy, this article is about the innovation of young students using intelligence and hard work for success. It is not a platform for your diatribe about nonsense.

In every land I have ever visited, young and beautiful young girls worship money if they are poor.
And old men take advantage of this situation.
Ever been in Beverly Hills, East Hampton, Hong Kong, Toyko, Bangkok, Rome, London, Miami Beach or Moscow?

Dread, that's a good point!!!

We need a young leader who starts reminding the Dominican people these things. It's already enough Leonel, Hipolito, Miguel, and some other crapped narcisist-egotistical old men behavior.

We need us, the young ppl of DR, to rise and voice our real needs and bring the true power of the ppl to our society ears.

The old kankasourus mind of the old traditionalist Dominican must be eliminated and replace it with the one of a new one. Enough is said and nothing is done.

We need to do what Japan just did, kicked all the old party leaders out of power and replaced them with fresh young minds.

NO MORE GRAY HAIR CORRUPTED OLD MAN TELLING US THE SAME STUPID STORIES OVER AND OVER.

We need new ways of thinking and living. Strong intellectual, social, moral, and developmental values that apply to all ppl of the Dominican Republic, not a few.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

I still get you, poverty is hard everywhere. Cuba is more poor than the DR, in la havana I saw old people ( White and Blacks) begging in the streets some CUCS. There is some prostituion too.

I didn't understand because it's a paradise like the DR , it's true that the US embargo is killing them too. But Damn I didn't eat a good fish for 2 weeks in that country and there is water all over that island.

The last time I was in the DR ( 2.5 months ago) I felt bad when I saw how they were young.

The DR is plenty of food specially if you eat LOCAL. Your land is fertile. This people don't need to sell you're precious women ( God knows they're really beautiful and I mean that because I travel a lot) because you can have a roof, and plenty of food .

But my brother what kills me most ( they do the same in my original country), it's when I see them in Sosua, and then when they get in Charles de Gaulle's Airport in Paris, these same pigs behave well

This is not the problem of our country.

The power and strength of any society starts at HOME, HOME...

It's not METRO, POLITICAL PARTY of whatever else!!!

So, we have to do is - STOP the politics and start a revolutionary process in which all young ppl of DR exposes their real thoughts, feelings, and what we really want for our country.

LET'S STOP THE OLD MEN TRADIONAL SH*T WHO KNOWS HOW TO CONTROL OUR MINDS THROUGH POLITICS AND WHAT NOT?

STOP the DEMENCIA, STOP TALKING ABOUT LEONEL, MIGUEL, HIPOLITO, etc

If we don't understand it, we are FUC****

POLITIANS ARE TAKING DR TO THE GALLOWS (all of them, not exceptions)

We need a new independent party with young ideas, modern input, and cutting edge laws almost close to what they have in other developed and non-developed countries. Let's take the good of both and create a new system that works for us DOMINICANS.

JPDTrinity,

That is a myth that parents don't want to send their kids to school.

There are no schools to send them!

Offer scholarships to Carol Morgan and see if they wouln't take you up on the offer!

Public education in DR essentially doesn’t exist, and what does exist in not fit for human beings in academic quality or physical facilities.

It is not by just shear neglect or government corruption but by a design that is so socially ingrained in us by those who benefit from our ignorance that they have us believing, as you do, that its is our own fault!

The reason I harp on the METRO as I have said many times before, is to keep ever present the waste of our resources on frivolous self serving political projects, so maybe just maybe, we don’t fall for it and allow it to happen ever again.

Your right the METRO is but a symptom of a grater disease, but sometimes it easer to keep pointing to the symptom until the patient (US) wakes up and realizes we have a disease!

So, please let's use you intellectual power and great knowledge of the subject to be delivered to the masses in a positive. Let's convene an independent party that can take this message of yours, mine, and everybody else to the masses.

DO U THINK THAT'S POSSIBLE?

NO NEGATIVE LANGUAGE

Respectfully though, I would like to appreciate the fact that this website is not just viewed by the “regulars” but there are people who are coming in after the movie started, so to speak. So what may be repetitive and tedious to you and others;

“NEGATIVE LANGUAGE”
“FINGERS POINTING”
“NAME CALLING”

is not new to them and they can get a crash course on LIE-onel Fernandez, if you will a METROLANDIA 101.

I have stated before that LIE-onel Fernandez has the bully pulpit and OUR tax dollars to dispense his propaganda and buy journalist a dime a dozen with exception of a very limited few which you can count on one hand and not use all five fingers.

Yes, even in the good old USA, but while I care for their suffering also, I am concentrating on advocating for the 99% of Dominicans who are voiceless, powerless or are so beaten down they have given up. I am sure there are people like you, me and others in all the countries you cite that are also speaking truth to power as we are attempting to do in our own modest way.

I will be bet the two of you gentlemen, dimes to pennies, that those who "run" our national economy via "all the eggs in the one tourism basket," have their personal portfolios highly diversified. So if diversification is good for them individually why not for our national economic interest.

Dread can speak to this probably better than any of us certainly me, regarding the high diversification model of the Singapore economy.

“The economy of Singapore is a developed country and highly developed state capitalist mixed economy. While government intervention in the market is kept at a minimum, the state controls and owns firms that comprise at least 60% of the GDP through government entities such as the sovereign wealth fund Temasek.[1] It has an open business environment, relatively corruption-free and transparent, stable prices, and one of the highest per capita gross domestic products (GDP) in the world.

Its innovative yet steadfast form of economics that combines economic planning with free-market[2] has given it the nickname the Singapore Model. Exports, particularly in electronics and chemicals, and services provide the main source of revenue for the economy, which allows it to purchase natural resources and raw goods which it does not have. Singapore could thus be said to rely on an extended concept of entrepot trade, by purchasing raw goods and refining them for re-export, such as in the wafer fabrication industry and oil refining. Singapore also has a strategic port which makes it more competitive than many of its neighbours to carry out such entrepot activities.

The Port of Singapore is the busiest in the world, surpassing Rotterdam and Hong Kong.[3] In addition, Singapore's port infrastructure and skilled workforce, which is due to the success of the country's education policy in producing skilled workers, is also fundamental in this aspect as they provide easier access to markets for both importing and exporting, and also provide the skill(s) needed to refine imports into exports.”

Some Puerto Ricans are studying the Singapore Model very closely because of the current economic crisis they are facing, especially since ironically the Singaporeans modeled their economy shortly after independence on the Puerto Rican economic development model of the early commonwealth's Operation Bootstrap (Operación Manos a la Obra). Apparently they used the Puerto Rican model and developed if further the Puerto Ricans chose a dependency model which has now come back to haunt them.

Please listen to this program http://www.vozdelcentro.org/?p=348 which although related to Puerto Rico, I feel is very relevant to the Spanish speaking Caribbean in particular.

I would be very interested to hear your opinions on how some of the things you hear could be adapted to our Dominican reality.

Ok guys my humble opinion about Singapore. This was the later 80s so I do not know about now. A guest worker in Singapore is just that. Any children born in Singapore to a guest work is a non resident non citizen, Guest workers are on one year renewal for the permit. A guest worker desiring to marry a Singapore citizen has to apply for residency prior to getting married or automatically deported. Rape hanging offence, Shop lifting, caneing offence. All housing is owned by the government with free hold lease. If you are a young person who has an apartment and you unemployed old parent is homeless they will throw you out of your home and give it to your parent. Littering detainable offence, Chewing gum in public, Smoking in public, wearing tie died shirts hippism) are all detainable offenses. Singapore biggest source of revenue then was transshipment. The produced little of their own products. The were the warehouse of all goods passing through the Melaka Strait.

The DR could do the same due to the proximity to the Panama Canal.
Education is light years ahead of the US let along the DR. The average person in Singapore can read and write at least two languages. The health police will come into your house to check for standing water in flower pots to ensure you do not have breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Finally first world military. Though small, well paid and, well equipped. They were big enough of a power house that the North Koreans blinked when they said they would detain a weapon ship if it came near.

Nehesay what you have in the DR is the mother state going. There are barriers to small holder agriculture because that can not be centrally controlled. When half the population is living in the greater Santo Domingo area with not enough water, Not enough power, and Not enough food production locally then they become babies in the mothers womb hooked up to the government umbilical.

The issue of tourism is a very simple one. No more money for tourism itself. Fix the roads and infrastructure on the interior and tourism will take off as a secondary benefit. This entire island is paradise and the beaches are only part of it. In Central America they are raising tilapia in cages in mountain lakes. Why not here? Roads to access lakes with long term lease for cabin sites and let locals make cabins to rent out to tourist. Not the government investing just long term permits for a price.
Let the local university give credit toward a degree for classes taken to learn Spanish as a foreigner. The US will pay 5k a semester for school and 1300 a month housing allowance for living for all the military veterans that have been out less than 8 years. 100000 a year get this benefit and less than 1/3 uses it. That is more income for the Universities that could be used to build up the facilities for the local students.
Bottom line may things do not require much money.

As for morality......who's morality? Yours?
Charity at the point of a gun?
Typical leftist tactic of being charitable with other people's money.
Personally, I have never hired an illegal.

Los gringos son los mas corruptos.

You soy un negro sabroso y guapo, pagar para una mujer es una verguanza...

Qué DIOS maldiga a todos estos turistas sexuales.

Nehesy, i have met many guys like you in my lifetime, who claim they never pay for sex. they all do. the fact that they do not simply name the price and hand over the cash, does not mean money does not change hands. some guys pay their girlfriend´s rent, credit cards, etc. i sincerely hope that you are not the type who has the woman spend money on you. there are names for people like that, and none of them are charitable.

@Drealocks

You're funny man !

May be you're stalking me because I pointed my finger on guys like you : gringos who travelled into the 3rd world (including my own original country) in order have sex with young women and boys.

It's a FACT when you take a plane for the DR, CUBA or AFRICA , they present you a movie with all the sex convicts ( Thailand, DR, Cuba, Morocco etc) who have been caught all over the world : 100 % ARE GRINGOS. They'd do the same at home ( in fact they do it...) but it's easier in the 3rd world you can pay the officials...

But I repeat (GOD knows what I'm saying and I'm not a hypocrite) I won't do those nasty things.

I look too good man !!!! JAJAJAJA

Yo soy un negro lindo y sabroso, pagar para un mujer es una verguanza , QUE DIOS MALDIGA A TODOS ESTOS TURISTAS SEXUALES and I MEAN IT...A true man with heart doesn't sleep with a hungry woman for money. The pedophiles should be ALL sent to jail for life...

nehesy, you are absolutely incorrect about your speculation of what i am. i am a caribbean man, born and bred. no gringo here. i am home. i am not here looking for young girls. i live a normal life. but, i will send you your trophy for being a guy who is so desirable to the opposite sex that women line up for miles with their credit cards to splurge their money upon his bountiful wonders. get a life, fool. nobody needs to hear your version of how human relationships should proceed. not everybody is as spectaculAr as you are. some guys have to part with some money in order to attract the opposite sex. good for you that you are God´s gift to women. the trophy has been sent to you by DHL, and the tracking number is DROP DEAD.
