The fat man finally got caught.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- A National District judge sent a merchant to spend one month in the jail at Najayo, after he was caught making an illegal connection to the power lines, the first such case ever recorded in the country.

Electrical System Assistant prosecutor Moisés Ferrer called the case unprecedented, since temporary incarceration had only been previously ordered for cable theft and the installment and use of fraudulent systems, but not for connecting to the grid to steal energy. “That’s something intangible.”

He said Permanent Attention judge Jose Alejandro Vargas handed down the ruling against Alexander Reyes, who was charged after being detained on Tiradentes avenue in the sector La Agustina, where he made a direct hook up from the Electricity Distributor Company EDESUR’s power lines to his store.

“It’s understood that it’s an important case since the judges are becoming aware that the staling of electrical energy is an infraction which must be punished by the country’s courts,” Ferrer said.

Jesus Magnifica y su Santos, The guy up the pole should be sent directly to 28. How could any sane electrical supply company look at that damn mess and claim they had any part of it. Until the electric company straightens out the lines so you can see where the hell they come from and where they go, how can they be indignate about some mentally chalanged person trying to get connected. What a hell of a chance any one takes getting close to those poles.
One nieghborhood young man desided his aunt needed a connect, he laid the wooden ladder up against a pole simular to the one pictured. Before it was overwith he succeeded in knocking two neighborhoods out of electric power, burning out our TV, DVD, Sterio, and my Computer with the power surge he caused when he cut into a buried line and shorted it out with a shovel. That is only one true story of a hundred I am sure.

That is where the government should step in and make EDESUR improve their infra structure or give it up to the co-ops like it should be in the first place. Why should a business make all that kind of money not improving the infrastructure and then cry like a baby because they lost control of it, because they never had control of it in the first place. It is a gold mine for the owners of EDESUR, given to them by the government. Let the Co-ops take it over. Don't you think for a moment if everyone had an interest there would be a lot more honesty shown.

Another thing is that the Power Company, EDESUR, should be made to provide their wire up to the contador to the resident and or businesses. Then is when they would have every right to be indignate about people connecting illegal. Look at any pole in the D.R. in a populated area and you see that there is such a mess that it would take a court of last resort to try and figure out what goes where and how !!!

WOW!!! Finally something is happening. People like him is the reason why there such problems with the electrical energy in the DR. Just like him there must be thousands that steal electricity and are not paying anything for the service. Then people that pay complain about power shortages and outage. There's your reason.

Did you know that out of every gallon of gas or diesel almost 90.00 pesos go to pay taxes
Our country needs to focus its energy in the right direction. Incarcerating someone for getting electricity is nonsense when we have the corruption at all levels of the government. This person sent to jail is poor and probably cannot afford the rising cost of electricity; they pay when the meter is running and when it is not.
We should be ashamed of the President and staff especially the Military officers who push thousands of Kilos around and live in mansions on a very modest salary, you see in our country a General makes about 800.00 dollars a month, However they have mansions and Fincas worth millions, That should be the focus and not on the poor who are just trying to survive.

I usually do not comment, but I must do so after reading this Colum and some of the comments made by its subscribers. Really, this is just bs and nonsense, if he had a padrino he would not be in Jail. Some think this is justice, but it is not. You see most politicians baseball player and military members steal the power…, yes I said it… they do not pay….So don’t be fooled by this nonsense, I can name to you Generals and Coronels, Current and ex baseball players that steal electricity….but they are connected so you will never see them in the headlines…LISTEN the poor are being squeezed to the point of no return, THEY WILL AT ONE POINT RETALIATE AGAINST THE SYSTEM THAT IS FULL OF CORUPTION AND DEFIANCE, but unless you live here you wont know the truth and understand.

IMF : as reported in this very news paper today.
It said the application of structural reforms has advanced, including the formulation of a strategy to reform the electrical sector aimed at eliminating the indiscriminate subsidies and considerably improve the service to all customers. Whos not going to listen or act. the government, that is in the same soup as EDESUR or is it visa versa???

Rich men do the dancing while the poor man pays the bills. Now it is not enough for the poor man to just survive so he must be sent off to jail. Judge Jose Alejandro Vargas please go after the real criminals those corupt politicians who keep all the money, power and electricitiy for themselves.

Tommy, I agree. But in our country you pay for both power and the outages. Most of these small colmados are suffering, but as i said they only go after the poor, how about the rich and famos...Dont be fooled.

What a country.
Those of us that live with multiple black outs a day that have a meter and pay for our service want this to happen. I have an automatic $1000 dollar outlay every three years to cover battery replacement. I spend around $60 a month on gasolince to ensure my batteries are charged enough at night for the evening black out in case the lights do not return in the morning.
The number one issue is 60% of power is stolen. Until that one issue is solved no other plan, investment in infrastructure or pipe dream will solve anything. I loose upwards of $100 a month just in money used to keep the minumum of services going in my houseplus my power bill. The fact that I have to fire up the generator to wash clothes or the fact as I can not run AC in my house because I can not count on the power staying onas the hot and cold cycle would make you sick.
Now the poor faily in the bario that can afford lights but can not afford an inverter system has not options. cont

This issue is a civil rights isse as to allow the non criminals to have power and force the criminals to pay for it. Any other way to twist it around is corrupt. Once the stealing is under control the other issues can be taken on in turn.

If a person own a company.and he is caght hooking the cable.
If that person is doing it for the past two years, he will be on jail onlyfor one month.
his lawyer will ask the judge to send him,to a rural area that ,he is going to be the only prisoner.

Once all offenders get a month it will all of sudden stop. Needs about a 1000 in one week the constant patrols it wouldbecom almost gone in the future. Pick every area, rich and poor. hit bars, houses, factories, everything. make a quata of 1000 every week in santo doingo alone. Then see how hard it is to fill the quatos in a month.
Make the police go looking. Then you actually having police patrol.
Second offence do an energy autit of the facilty with the illeagal connection. every curling iron, every Tv every blender and calculate how uch it would cost for that power 24/7 for six months and that is the fine to get out of jail.
Give 10% of this money to the one that reported them.
