Many of us Dominicans are of white ancestry, and we are clearly no less Dominican than those of darker skin tone.
This girl is clearly beautiful by any standard, and she deserves to represent us, and I am proud that she does and that she would have a good shot at winning this rather meaningless and dubious tiltle.
Some of above commentaries are clearly racist, and only serve to devide us. We are a country founded by immigrants, some white, many black and none Tainos, since they were all and sadly made extinct.
Let's get over this racial devide and move forth cohesively and with singular purpose to transform our country into the gem of our corner of the world, where tolerance flourishes and opportunity abounds and a person is only limited by the extent of his ambition and commitment to his objectives. That would be a truly great achievement-from my point of view, and hopefully from yours as well.

Basta,
Several of my relatives are blond with blue or green eyes, so what should we call them in front of someone like Al Sharpton or the world, for that matter: white or black? I do believe they are white, and they trace their inalienable lineage all the wy to Paris and Seville.
They look European and they should, because they are direct descendants of pure European. Proud Dominicans, nevertheless. They eat locrio, moro, sancocho and asopao, and they would gladly take on any darker Dominican dancing merengue or bachata or bolero or anything else. They hold great love for our country and their birth certificates loudly states they are Dominican. So, what should we call them: mongrels? I don't think so...they are proud Dominicans and that's all they'll ever be. They are purely white and Dominican-get over it!

And by the way black does crack, hell sometimes it's born all broken up like Humpty Dumpty. LOL!! But seriously speaking the DR has many colors and white is one of them, so is black, so is brown, so is beige, so is ebony, so is ivory. The DR is one of the few places in the world that can be considered a true melting pot of races and cultures. So please folks spare me your ignorance. When I read some of the posts, it is as if you guys have never been to the DR and don't know the Dominican people. I can somewhat understand why a non-Dominican would make such statement, maybe the only Dominicans they know are the ones portrayed in media like baseball players, merengue and bachata singers. You made a very subjective statement, based on your own individual perceptions of beauty. Ruth no doubt is beautiful, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and even though both have their own particular brand of beauty, they are two different kinds. It is rather more a question of what you personally prefer and not which one is better then the other. As to whether or not Miss Arias represents Dominican beauty, the answer is YES but of course she does, just as much as Amelia Vega (also a Cibaeña) represented us when she won the Miss Universe crown. But just in case if you did not know, aware, have never been to this region, a Miss Arias type beauty is a normal and common sight in the Cibao.
From: United States
Another point I wish to make is that judges select girls that are most likely able to successfully compete and have a greater chance to win the Miss Universe contest. This means that genetically speaking many Dominican beauties do not satisfy the requirements of the present day European concept for beauty. The girls must be physically proportional such as tall and slender with small chests, buttocks and hips. Domincan women have what I prefer, but tend to be voluptuous and meaty, larger breasts, bigger butts and hips. unfortunately, these characteristics do not meet and satisfy the standards that have been set, particularly if you are talking about girls that make up a big portion of our population and are also truely representative of the Dominican beauty just as much as a caucasian Dominican represents us just as well.
From: United States, Fresh Water Paradise-NY Finger Lakes
After reading above posts, one is forced to conclude we are more racist than previously thought.
Certainly, for a 3rd world country like ours, with a diverse populace, this can not bode well and it shall hold us back.
To make progress, we really must look past skin color and judge people on the content of their character. We are all Dominican, whether you are black, mulatto, white or whatever. Let's get over it and move along in unison and strength, and let's rather concentrate on making our country great and not diminish it.

oh jeezus, no! more boneheaded remarks from professor NY4LIFE, one of the genuine know nothings of this forum. he allows that the DR is one of the most diverse populations outside of the USA. thankfully, in this case, he used the qualifier ¨one of ¨, which seems to suggest a degree of equivocation and uncertainty on his part. apparently, he has never heard of a little place known as Europe, which is probably even a bigger melting pot than the USA. he also fails to realise that all the groups he describes in his diatribe are found in the larger caribbean islands. ah , well. if you can´t convince them with information, baffle them with bullshit...

Is just so funny to see people who are preaching all this Dominican Black power and yet are just as prejudice as those that preach Dominican White power. The two faces of the same coin. Unfortunate for both groups the reality is that most Dominicans understand that we come in all flavors and regardless if you are White, Black, Brown, Tanned, Ebony or Ivory, if you were born in the Dominican Republic you are DOMINICAN!! And for those of you that say that this beautiful woman those not represent the beauty of Dominican women I suggest you travel and get to know your own country instead of making total idiots of yourselves because the last time I checked the Cibao region from corner to corner to corner to corner is filthy full of women that look just like her.

Does anybody remember Denny Mendez ? The first black beauty queen of Dominican ancestry to represent Italy in the 1997 Miss Universe contest. Back then it caused an uproar throughout this boot shape nation, because bottom line, she did not represent Italian beauty. Nevertheless, she was chosen and was able to compete against the very best and ended-up top semi-finalist. What was most significant, in spite of the controvesy, the overwhelming support received by the Italian people, with over 9 million phone-in votes in her favor.
Comparatively speaking, it is Ironic to read the posts against Miss Arias, a native born caucasian Dominican, as considered not to be representative of Dominican beauty. Yet a none-native, foreign born naturalized Italian, black female was chosen to represent Italy and received the overwhelming support of the Italian people. It is hard to believe, how our very own people, criticised Miss Arias for being a white beauty queen, how ironic indeed.

"Beautiful white Dominican women always bring out massive insecurities in dark-skinned pariguayos." ????
Oh really..........why do you say that?
Is it because they are beautiful or because they are white?
I understand that in general, very beautiful women regardless of skin color, tend to make other females jealous, even threatened at times and may make many men feel insecure.
I remember some years back before I became self-employed, the company I worked, had this new female supervisor. Unfortunately, she was tons of FUN
FAT, UGLY and NASTY-Yes, that's what I said, FUN;
Anyway, she never really had any real issues with her male counterparts. However, I noticed that as the months went by, little by little all of the nice, pretty and shapely female co-workers were let go, until we were all left with the homeliest group of female employees you ever saw.
Unfortunately, many times being beautiful or good looking may sometimes be more of a curse then a blessing.
This negros alway trying to make every thing racial. We should clean DR again.
Don't pay no mind to Joseano, ese un Haitianito grajoso que cree que DR es Haiti.
QUE VIVA LA REPUBLICA DOMINICANA Y SUS BELLAS MUJERES.
Are you not to keen on 85% of Dominicans ?
Sorry guys, but the Celine Dion look does nothing for me. You can fight over her...I will be in the background scoping real Dominican beauty.
That would be a truly great achievement-from my point of view, and hopefully from yours as well.

she is gorgeous, that part of the country has beautiful women!

That is positively and absolutely correct. Even those that did not have the opportunity to attend school were naturally polite and well mannered and were not as crude and chusma as is so evidently prevalent today.

All I can say that is one of the saddest posting I have ever come across on DT.
The sad thing is that it represents a significant majority of self hating Dominican opinion!
God do we have a long way to go as a society when we hate ourselves for the way we look!
That's why DR is headed to doom land. Because all of us have allowed the evolution of such individuals as myself "Right" - Dreadlocks - is that Haitian or Jamaican dreadlocks or simply Dominican fake ones.
See, you don't have an identity anymore, you have to wear or call yourself dreadlocks to feel good.
That's what I'm talking about?
You know wether you like it or not, perception is what dictates the inner whirl of this world....
If not, can you tell me which continent has suffered the most ever since the begining of this inhabited planet?
Do you know why?
Perception...it's all about the custom you were...it's simply directly connected to oneself!!
and guess what?, most of Dominicans are simply too busy drinking beers and flirting with the Chankleteras to realize there's someting called highly moral, intellectual, educated, good life future...
Continued...
and there is going to be more?
I'm simply concerned about the politics and mechanical innerworks of our current societal situation.
Noone can see the problem we are facing with this Haitian Invasion, needless to say, virministic drug problems, dirty political games running the country since day one, and top of it all....no one, absolutely no one wants to get educated. Our kids are more concerned about instant gratifications, I want it NOW!!
so you tell me, if I've not evolutionized...we simply need a wash out, let's bring smart Europeans and have them rinse our brainless society with good European neurons and see what happens 10 years from now...
Otherwise, let's keep on mashing ourselves with the Haitians and let's see where we'll end up...
Sure, No evolutionized...go ask a white South African man, they'll tell you with great details what is it all about?
Sorry, If I was not too evolutionized...I'm just a typical ignorant Dominican!!!
i never said that ALL cibaeñas are aviones
If you read my comment one more time you'll see that
i wrote that mujeres lindas en el cibao are more likely to be engreidas or in anglo stuckup and that there is a difference between mujeres buenas y mujeres lindas, well maybe i shouldn't use the word aviones anyway. But just to clarify i was trying to convey to xwill that women from el sur de la isla tend to be more humble than the hot looking cibaeña, I'm saying this out of my own experience but like you said its all about taste.
:)
"the ones who gave the world the benefits of their inventiveness and intellect, and a penchant for social order"
Now you tell the world, what have Dominicans or Haitian given the world/Humanity?
Nothing, right?
That's all I'm saying...yes, some 50% of Europeans could be the scum of the earth...however, I rather have 50% than 100% Haitians/Dominicans good for nothing.
Get it...at least most of the Europeans kids I know they go to college, tell what percentage of Dominican males go to college?
Yes, Europeans girls are bad, however they still go to college...and Dominican Girls, what % go to college?
I don't know...EDUCATION....EDUCATION...EDUCATION....that's why Europeans come here, 'cause they know it's full of illeterate PPL. How come they don't go to some highly educated country. Because they know there are laws to respect, and real man to deal with?

After reading above posts, one is forced to conclude we are more racist than previously thought.
Certainly, for a 3rd world country like ours, with a diverse populace, this can not bode well and it shall hold us back.
