Santo Domingo. -Drugs Control agents on a helicopter yesterday downed a unidentified plane loaded with drugs five miles from the Saona island, which had reportedly airdropped a part of its load just moments before and the second drug-laden aircraft ever shot down over Dominican territory.
Local media report that when the crew, of the Army Air Cavalry Dvision assigned to the DNCD, ordered the plane to leave Dominican airspace or land in the nearest point in the zone, but instead were disregarded and fired on with a weapon of unspecified caliber .
It said the agents returned fire and downed the plane, whose fuselage and part of the drug it still carried had been found yesterday. Although the authorities confirmed the reports further details weren't provided such as the number of people aboard the plane.
The authorities have yet to find any people or remains for which if they died in the aerial dogfight isn’t known, while the zone is being combed in search of the drug.
It’s the second drug-laden plane ever shot down over Dominican territory, after an Air Force A-37 Dragonfly jet fired on a twin engine craft with one crewman, who survived a fiery crash near the country’s Northwest, next to the border with Haiti in the early 1990s.

They deny they shot down a plane loaded with drugs
Antonio Peña reported that the aircraft was apparently of South American origin and so far they have not found victims of the accident.
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic .- The Armed Forces minister denied Tuesday that members of the National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) shot down an aircraft in a rural area of the province of La Altagracia, as some media disseminated.

Depending on what kind of helicopter and weapons capabilities it not that difficult for a helicopter to shoot down a small aircraft like a cessna or a piper, an attack helicopter has a huge advantage over a small plane simply because of its maneuverability.
That kind of maneuverability can enable a helicopter guns to pull a lock-breaking evasive maneuver against an over agressive pilot by just letting it overshoot.
Furthermore, if a small cessna like the one in the picture overshot a chopper and it went into the vertical, the chopper would simply point the nose vertical, get a lock on and fire an AIM-92 Stinger and boom.
Claro que se supone que el piloto del helicoptero de la DNCD tiene experiencia ademas de despegar y aterrizar

This is all one big joke on our governments face once again. First allowing the illegal plane to leave the DR airspace? Then shooting it down and not finding all of its shipment and people from the plane immediately after shooting it down and accounting for the inventory. Smells like more corruption for sure. This whole story is like a big joke and those involved with telling it this way should be ashamed because anyone with half a brain is going to say the DR is just a big JOKE!

It is about time we show the narco jockeys that we mean business!
I will have more juicy details later after I get the inside scoop, since normally military DR helicopters are unarmed, and that is what the smugglers thought, but the rumor is that this particular one had been equipped by "uncle", either that or the DNCD agents responded with their small arms only, accomplishing quite a feat to bring down an airplane in mid air. It is something out of the Red Baron WWI dog fights. LOL.

Story leaves out much about antecedents and subsequent developments, with critical details lacking.
I for one would like to understand how a "whirly bird", with its relatively low speed, compared to a fixed wing plane, was able to shoot down a moving target, "Red Baron" style.
I fwould urther like to understand how the "whirly bird" did not hover and loiter by downed aircraft to capture narco-traffickers. Also, with ensuing trauma from high impact, these guys were likely disoriented and in need of assistance. How far from shore did they make impact?
Is it possible that this is a case of someone not paying proper toll and a subtle message being sent, particularly with the return of perpetrators to ruling command, so as not to terribly upset them? Maybe. Maybe.
We really wouldn't wish to piss off Chavez-at least not while our beloved presidnt is visiting and the refinery sale has not been consumated.

hey, hellborn, i am all for eradicating drugs, at least in their present guise. i think they should be legal, but that is for another thread. as long as the purveyance and consumption is accompanied by such societal mayhem, by all means, wipe it out. but for governments to invent fictitIous dogfights, and put it in the news, makes the country look like a land of nitwits. any guy from Madagascar, or Cambodia, or Tonga can read this and tell right away that it is little more than comic relief..
