Eric Schwartz in a press conference in the National Palace yesterday.
Washington to contribute US$10.5 million for Haiti
Santo Domingo.- Several U.S. officials headed by the Undersecretary for Topics of Population, Migration and Refugees yesterday visited the president of Electoral Board (JCE) in his office, and asked about the situation of Haitians in the country.
Julio Cesar Castaños Guzmán said to journalists that he told Eric Schwartz that the Dominican Constitution clearly defines the status and documentation of foreigners in the country, bud didn’t explain why the U.S. officials brought up the topic of Haitian immigrants in Dominican Republic.
He clarified however that the JCE neither grants to nor repeals the Dominican nationality from anybody, and only issues certificate to the foreigners when the Immigration Agency has defined their status in the country, by issuing a definitive or provisional residence.
The JCE president said the visit of the U.S. officials with a delegation of United States diplomats in the country is related to the earthquake in Haiti. “That conversation occurs as part of the strong earthquake in Haiti on January 12, and also of Dominican Republic’s reality from the many immigrants who work here and whose children are born here.”
Schwartz said they visited the JCE to bring a message of gratefulness from president Barack Obama and the Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, for the collaboration and help by the Dominican Government and the people to Haiti.
In a subsequent press conference in the National Palace the U.S. official revealed that Washington will contribute US$10.5 million for critical health, education and aid programs.

DR should start implementing an ARIZONA LAW, sadly it would never work cause the cops would first ask for money and them will forget all about it

The U.S. is probably worried the Haitians will try to leave the DR for the U.S.
The U.S. needs to mind it's business and FIX it's immigration laws and stay the hell out of Dominican issues....don't allow the long arm of the "silver tongued, blue gummed devil" in the White House to reach into the DR....

Many Haitians that come to DR and stay illegally have no papers from the Haitian government whatsoever, and the Haitian consulate does not provide them easily and freely to them either.
If the US wants the Haitians to have documentation and define their transit status in the DR, then there should be a massive and well financed effort to provide documentation to the Haitian economic exiles, paid by the US government, not the DR tax payer, who is already burdened with paying for their health, education, and use of infrastructure and security.

Where we live outside of PP there have been Haitians for years but since the earthquake there are many more living in partly finished houses. They look for work but there really is none so now the have taken up stealing. They have been watching our watchman and when he went home in the morning and no one was there, they got a car jack and bent the bars to get in and stole a pillow and a $50.00 drill. They caused more damage to the bars than what they stole. Unless something is done about the Haitians petty crime is going to skyrocket. Mike

Generoso,
It appears that the understated message here is that the US will give aid, perhaps massive aid, if the Dominican government plays ball, i.e., that it "manage" the Haitian issue to US liking. And as many people understand, the rebuilding efforts have not gone as planned, it's behind schedule, of course, and all this means many more Haitians will seek their fortunes elsewhere, in the DR, of course. All this could lead to an explosive and tragic set of circumstances. And of course, DR will be blamed by the NGOs and foreign governments for being racist, etc. Sadly, I see no way forward in this situation. I agree with you that LF and the Dominican civic institutions have to speak with one voice on this matter so that foreign governments understand the plight and severe pressures placed on DR. All foreigners in DR need to have their legal status confirmed is long overdue, and will establish the prerequisite for any legal challenges to come. All foreigners.

USA must get their own house in order, before attempting to help others Ther is a huge battle brewing concerning the Mexican/Latin illegals in the southwestern states. It is becoming soley a political game, to grab votes. Look at what is happening in Washington today regarding PR. It is all for votes, and both parties, Dem and Rep are playing this one to the hilt. It is shameful that most people are going to be caught sleeping and it will be to late then. USA let the DR handle it's own Haitian immigration problems, we have enough issues at home, to address and solve first.
From: United States, New York City
The U.S. government should fix their immigration problems first, rather than get involved in other country’s problem with illegal immigrants. Everybody knows that Arizona past the new law because none of the U.S. presidents have had the balls to make a decision on what to do with illegal immigrants. They don’t want to look bad to their political party, nor do they want to look bad to the people that put them in office. They want to be with God, but also with the Devil.

Meeting probably went something like this. How many Haitians do you have living in DR? We need to know how many visas we will need so they can be americans. And by the way, we will be taking some of those visas away from the ones allotted to your country. now go away and mind your own business. Thank you.

Yeap, the deal was not a good one for DR.
They probably offered DR to handle the massive exodus of Haitians and U.S also offered to help cope with the social dismay they bring and input into our society. Unbelievable, worst is if the Dominican government bought it. We should not be responsible for more social crap in DR, we already have enough of our own and them Haitians.
What we need to do is Kick all of them out so we can fit the Dominicans that will be deported from U.S when all these new immigration laws kick in. If we don't take care of this, DR will be a mess, well more than what it is. Not only Haitians are good for nothing but petty work, cleaning bathrooms and what not? as someone said.
Anyways, anybody else can do this if not ask who used to do their work some years ago? - cut our sugar cane, clean houses, etc, etc. You'll be amazad once you find out.
So they are as needed as a lot of Haitians lovers think....

My DR friends. The aid your honorable Prez sent the Haitian people is deeply appreciated. For, in Sept 2, 1930 a hurricane destroyed DR capital, with 1000s dead and homeless; DR asked for help. Haitian Prez Eugene Roy was first to respond with trucks load of medication and funds to DR immediately. Haitian Red Cross and students formed relief committee to organize shipments; doctors, medical students, nurses, engineers left for DR to assist. DR Prez Trujillo sent messages of thanks to Haitian Prez Roy, stating that “Your Excellency and the noble people of Haiti for your willingness to send a rescue squad to work together to restore our phone line in the South" and "I received the visit of the Haitian delegate, and I heard the words of fraternal sympathy for our Country ... Please accept, on behalf of the Dominican people and on my own behalf, the testimony of the warmest gratitude. But, 7 years later, Trujillo ordered the massacre of about 25,000 Haitian immigrants at the border.

Kick all Haitians out...DR for DOMINICANS
It's not our fault Haiti turned into nothing politically, econmically, and socially. We are really sorry for what mother nature did.....no one can control and manage that (nature), however we as smart intellectual human beings can properly control our acts. For example:
- Do not burn your forest grounds
- Do not kill your fellow man (child) to play witchcraft with his/her skeleton
- Do not stop education
- Do not destroy your buildings
- Do not behave like savages
- Do not bite the hands that feed you
- Do not destroy and anihilate your government funds
I just say...Kick all Haitians out of DR...even the Dominicans that are good for nothing...
Oh Gee!!
