Santo Domingo. - As the technology to identify people has been perfected, so has grown the number of patients in the country who seek procedures which few plastic or reconstructive surgeons venture to practice, due to the link with crimes.
Operations in the fingers to eliminate fingerprints and pronounced changes in the face have become two of the most sought procedures, but which are also banned by the Dominican Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Esthetic Surgery and by the National School of Residence Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, due to their links with illegal actions.
Although all doctors decline to discuss it openly plastic surgeons quoted by news source listin.com.do say that though isolated before, they now see more cases of patients who try to bribe them and even threaten them to undergo the procedure.
They affirm that while some patients have even placed blank checks on their desks, in dollars or euros, in other cases the doctors receive threats from people seeking an identity change.
The increase in cases has prompted the directors of the Dominican Society of Plastic Surgery to call on its members to abstain from conducting the procedures which may violate the Law, and warn they face expulsion if an inadequate practice is verified.
Equal recommendation has been emanated the National School Residence Surgery Plástica and Reconstructiva Rescuing hospital B. Gautier, with the purpose to create brings back to consciousness between its doctors in formation, which that type procedure is not admitted.
Dominican Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery president Luis González says he’s convinced “serious specialists” don’t do it but acknowledged that there are doctors “hooked to the specialty” who may be doing it. “We aren’t taught to make that type of surgery.”
He added that plastic surgery to obtain a radical face change isn’t possible in the country yet, although transplants are common practice.
