PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic.- The various Government agencies in charge of staging the world summit on Haiti’s future “Solidarity beyond the Crisis” yesterday informed the representatives of the diplomatic delegations in the country on the status of the preparations of the international conclave slated for June 2 in this resort region.
Presidency Press director Rafael Núñez announced the creation of a website (www.cumbrehaitird.org), for the communication and logistic process, via which local and foreign journalists and photojournalists can obtain their press credentials by filling out a form, and the passes will be issued on May 28.
President Leonel Fernandez has been the key promoter of the conclave, and has pledged the construction of an university in Port-au-Prince as Dominican Republic’s post catastrophe contribution.

He sure loves his "cumbres", doesn't he?
Maybe at this one they will announce the results from the February 2008 Cumbre. Last we heard there were promises of great things to come. So far, all has been forgotten.

People now, remember we both live on the same island. Haiti needs to get back on it's feet. However the amount of Haitians in Santo Domingo is alarming! Everyday I see new one's coming out of the woodwork. I do believe that a massive deportation process is in order. The balance needs to be restored.

How bad is it? Are all or most of the major cities experiencing this growth in illegals or just the main two, SD and Santiago? Any numbers?

They are everywhere. Colmadones full of them speaking Kreyol, they fight, get drunk and just look at you. Then you here them saying blan this, blan that and racist...I'm like whoa buddy I'm not a racist!!!!
I haven't been to Santiago but in Santo Domingo Sur where I live. I noticed the chimi guy had a new helper. The guy was Haitian and I spoke to him in my 5 words of Kreyol. Then he walked away towards the local car dealership and hidden behind the caseta or or Oficinita we're like 4 more of them. A week later, I was walking to my friends house and there is this abandoned business for car engines. It's a huge place with a house in the back. I noticed someone there since it's all dark. It had like ten Haitians living there, maybe more. They just sit there watching you walk by in the darkness. I said to them Ca Pase in kreyol and some said Na bu le.

I know a lot of Haitians read this or some Haitians read this. We Dominican's aren't racist we just have too many of you in DR. It's just too much of a burden on the country and all this aid is going to Haiti where all these Haitians would do more good.
Transportation
Crime
Food
Infrastructure
Housing
Etc.
It takes a toll on DR and you know it....It's not racism it's common sense.

I agree with some poster on the issue regarding that this president is more concern over Haiti than his own natal country. These politicians are just a pile of opportunist that doesn’t give a damn over the country's well being. We don't have a Balaguer to take charge at the Fronteras and kick the evil human right NGO out of the country. Nevertheless this is the best option since the only way to preserve our identity as shown by the opportunist leadership is for us to take care of the Haitian's economy. Maybe when thing get better they start moving back to their country. I'm pessimist though because those Haitians' professionals that graduate in DR don't go back to to help restore their country, they stay in DR.

The lack of compassion shown here never ceases to amaze me.
You guys aren't smart enough to realize that Haiti has never had the chance to exist as anything other than a failed state. An independent, healthy, prosperous Haiti is actually in our best interest. Sure there are a lot of old reasons to dislike the Haitians but the reality is that we are on the same island and the failure of one half brings down the other half. Do you actually believe that if there were jobs that paid a decent wage all of these illegals would be flooding our side? Do you actually believe that these people would leave a homeland where they had a chance for a decent life, in order to live somewhere they are hated just for their color? I am always calling for the improvements that we here need to see. However, one improvement that we also need to see is the other half of the island growing. I don't believe that LF and his buddies want anything other than more money for themselves, but if a byproduct of that

Juanb is essentially correct and this issue has been touched on numerous times in the past. While it is a very difficult situation to bear for many Dominicans, a sort of Faustian bargain-for those opposed to the policy-is at hand. Basically LF and the DR government are given the go-ahead for major infrastructure programs, IMF supported and even Bond issues are supported by the US and European governments. All this international support comes, however, with conditions: help the international community with its program for Haitian renewal. And that means don't move to upset the delicate balance, however, uncomfortable for Dominicans. Of course, many in the Dominican Republic and Haiti want to see the programs for Haiti's renewal accelerated as fast as possible, so that the immigration pressures, at least from a Dominican prospective, from West to East starts to flow in reverse. Hopefully the monies and massive infrastructure programs in Haiti are commenced ASAP, along with the

continue works in the DR. Labor wages are a big problem and I for one can not see any major agricultural or infrastructure program that will not have some Haitian labor input. International competitiveness necessitates this situation. DR needs to finally get control over its citizenry data. Who is a Dominican? Visas for Haitians. Paying Dominicans higher wages will drag-down productivity in these important sectors and LF and the business community will probably never allow this to happen. So what are Dominicans to do? Improve their skill set to improve their chances of higher paying jobs, and hope that these are forth coming from the modernization drive. Many will continue to migrate to higher wage nations, but as the World Recession is still at work, the jobs are just not as numerous as before. I hope that these investment plans do take place, because if they aren't a major social explosion might envelop the DR. Let's hope and demand that LF and Co., keep their promises.

As a non Dominican or Haitian living here, I find it funny and a bit ironic that many who post here and talk of "their country"...don't live here. Why would that be? Better opportunities? Can't be the weather...not too many Dominicans head north for the snow and cold!
I interact with Dominicans of all social levels (the bottom being the most polite and respectful) as well as Haitians...some here for years...some for days. This occurs on a daily basis. Sure, there is some tension, but I see more tension and disrespect by the elite Dominicans snubbing their own less fortunate brothers and sisters.
A stronger Haiti is good for the DR. We all know that. A stronger DR is good for the USA. With an improvement in employment opportunities, 10's of thousands of Dominicans would not be in the USA. Same goes for Haiti. The answer is not restriction. The answer is opportunity and that is what this conference is all about.
