Santo Domingo.- The Environment Ministry yesterday revealed that “Haitians paid by Dominicans,” are burning forests in the national parks to then use the lands for agriculture.
Environmental Protection Service (SENPA) director Francisco Tolentino said groups of Haitians set fire to the trees to make charcoal, and warned that since it’s a criminal practice, the Environment Ministry will file charges against them.
The official said trees have been torched in a protected area in Monte Plata, near the water falls at Socoa, the National Park Los Haitises and in the National of the East.
SENPA rangers have arrested dozens of Haitians caught burning forests and making charcoal, and have been criminally charged.
Earlier this year news of the atrocious death of four Haitians near the border shook the world, as the foreigners reportedly burned trees to make charcoal were killed by locals under as yet unclear circumstances.

Just a thought.....but wouldn't it be better to make deals with some of these Hatianos....give them deals - reduced sentences - for their cooperation in identifying the Dominicans who paid them to commit these crimes? Go after the Dominicans who are enabling these crimes, make examples of them, and continue to arrest those physically committing the crimes.
