Presidents Preval, Fernandez, with officials.
SANTO DOMINGO.- Haiti president René Préval announced that on Wednesday, July 30 he will meet in Haiti with Dominican par Leonel Fernandez to continue the process to relaunching the Dominican-Haitian Mixed Bilateral Commission.
The two leaders met for three hours yesterday in the National Palace.
“This mixed commission created in 1996 has met four times and we could solve problems on immigration, health, economic development and everything, but unfortunately this commission has not met since 2000,” Préval said.
He reiterated his gratitude for Dominicans, stressing their unconditional support after the January quake, including mothers who took in children in their house to nurse them and those who arrived injured from Haiti at Dominican hospitals. “Once again, my admiration for the Dominican sister nation which has been so generous with the government and the people of Haiti after the earthquake.”
Economy minister Temístocles Montas also revealed that in yesterday’s meeting it was agreed that Fernandez will travel to northern Haiti on July 31 to break ground for the construction of the university pledged as a donation after the quake.
He said those were the two main topics discussed in the meeting which began at 5:50 p.m., although others, such as the situation of the homeless Haitians and the elections slated for November.
“We reviewed the relations between Dominican Republic and Haiti and to achieve what president Fernandez has called a strategic alliance between both nations to make the mixed bilateral commission operational was considered of great importance.”
Haiti’s reconstruction
Haiti Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive said the meeting between Fernandez and Préval was nothing more than a meeting between two men who have a clear vision on the manner which each can help to achieve Haiti’s coherent reconstruction.
He said he is satisfied with the aid which has arrived in his country, noting that it’s impossible to build houses for all the people affected by the quake.

the best way to solve the problems that the DR has with the million or so Haitians living in the DR legally and illegally is to make Haiti a country where jobs are available at correct wages so the Haitians have no motivation toleave their own country, Then both countries will be more content , anything that can be done to advance this objective is , in my opinion ,a move in the right direction.

There will be a lot of work in Haiti, but I have yet to see a Haitian pack up a leave.
The Haitians that are here in the DR have found that screwing over Dominicans is easier than screwing over a Haitian.
So they don't really want to go back home.

I agree with the idea of helping haiti get on their feet and prosper will eventually help relations between both countries, the problem is that the haitian leaders are a bunch of pathetic losers.

If Preval wants more support from Dominican nationalist then he must follow up on the treaties already on paper and change the name of the island to it's proper and only name "Isla de Santo Domingo". Until this happens trust between Haiti and DR will not be pipe dream. The least he can do is prove to DR that Haiti is trust worthy in signing treaties and bilateral agreements. Until this action takes place my good wishes for Haiti will also carry distrust for Haiti.

The president of Haiti sounds quite negative. Why the hell not build a house for everyone that lost their home in Haiti. All he has to do is to keep the door open and his hands out of his pockets and keep his government as clean as he possibly can. The world will come and help the Haitian people this is the time, if it passes because of negativeness it may cause the Haitian people to walow in hell for ever.
