Santo Domingo.- Dominican soldiers will begin training to join the United Nations peacekeeping missions, a task charged to a facility in the First Brigade Army base, built at a cost of US$3 million donated by the U.S. Government.
U.S. interim ambassador Christopher Lambert, present in the inaugural said the money is from the State Department and managed by the South Command.
“The initiative’s objective is to support and provide equipment and training to the countries that have shown an interest in conducting of peacekeeping operations, which is the case of the Dominican Armed Forces as member of the Central American Armed Forces Conference,” the diplomat said.
The Dominican military, “receive the tools to prepare officers and soldiers to participate in UN peacekeeping missions, as observers or as an integral part of the operations of this international organism’s forces,” he said.
Lambert said he was satisfied with the response of the senior military commanders. “Beyond any monetary value, these facilities are a symbol of the USA’s integral and continuous commitment with Dominican Republic,” adding that his country’s different agencies contribute on a daily basis, through its Embassy.

OMG!
If the jobs are about sitting down all day long holding a rusty M-1 with no bullets and fasting for 3 days in a row, then they qualify.
Since I don't think there is any money to be made in the peacekeeping business, I doubt the brass be interested.

You are correct. The UN peace keepers carries a much better salary than just about any position in the lower levels of the FAD.
Quote from Parade.com
"For every peacekeeper a country provides, the U.N. pays their government each month: $1028 for salary and allowances; $303 supplementary pay for specialists; $68 for personal clothing, gear, and equipment; and $5 for personal weaponry. (The governments, in turn, pay the soldiers.) The training and equipment the U.N. provides also allow these countries to keep larger standing armies than they would otherwise be able to afford. "

I am suspect about this and think they are paving the way for duty in Afghanistan, as part of another Dominican commitment to that region, to maybe be announced later.
Last time during Hipoloco's term that soldiers where sent to Iraq, they only got paid their Dominican salary, and nothing else, and all the promises of US salaries were forgotten.
Maybe they should also recruit and train Haitians as soldiers and send them as peacekeepers, we should keep our boys in DR and not be sent as cannon fodder.

General,
The jeepful of Dominican troops sent to Iraq as part of the "Coalition of The Willing" did not come within a million miles from the areas of hostile fighting. That was just a ruse to gain support for an unpopular war by galvanizing countries to "fight" in the Iraqi war campaign. Some of the supporting coalition members did not even have a conventional military or fighting force. The countries of which were given millions of dollars in subsidies and credits, if not the individual soldiers. I am a cynical person by nature but I doubt that this will be a US or UN trick to exploit Dominican soldiers because as usual 99% of the blood and plunder will be paid for by the US and in this case, rightfully so.

Forgive me for correcting you counselor, but if you research the contribution to the Iraqui war by the Dominican Republic, as part of the multinational force, they were sent to Iraq's al-Qadisiya and Najaf provinces, which was stage for the heaviest insurgent attacks and constant mortar and RPG harassment. The soldiers stationed there who formed part of the contingent along with Spain's finest, did not have a cakewalk, or parade setting, and had it pretty rough fighting back over 12, (twelve) all out frontal assaults by suicidal insurgents. They were lucky to suffer no casualties, unlike the Spaniards.
So as far as "coming within a million miles from the areas of hostile fighting" you did not have the correct information.
PS Over three hundred soldiers is not a "jeepful" of troops.

General,
I should have known better than to engage you in any discussion regarding any of the military arts. I referenced my statement from a NYT op-ed piece regarding the high cost of mounting the "coalition of the willing" versus the return on the investment. I regret using the terms "million miles away" and "jeepful" which were obvious ironic exaggerations. I apologize for the insensitivity that using such phraseology would cause to all Dominicans that served valiantly and under fire during the Iraqi war and conflict. Furthermore, I apologize to all those who may have been rightly offended by my callous remark and I thank you for your level and considerate response. If anything, I at least hope that others can see that there is no need to be hostile or insulting in disagreement and I thank you for that as well.

All respect intended - should the Dominican Military not get their own house in order before trying to act as policemen and policewomen to the world through the United Nations? It would seem that this idea has the earmark or political grandstanding. I believe it may be a better idea to get a grip on the out of control crime and corruption in this country before turning ill equipped and poorly trained troops on the rest of the world or to become "cannon fodder" for US Military activities around the globe.
