Santo Domingo.- If the bill to regulate alcohol is successful in Congress, sidewalk drinkers will have to forego the practice or face up to two years in jail.

“In the areas of public dominion, sidewalks, avenues, parks, streets and green areas spirits will not be consumed, unless the Interior Ministry and Police authorizes it to celebrate some occasional event,” Article 6 of the proposed legislation clearly states

If the legislators approve it the sale of alcoholic drinks in open places located less than 300 meters from schools, hospitals and clinics will be banned.

The initiative, elaborated by the Interior and Police Ministry, also ratifies the current schedule for the sale of alcoholic beverages by businesses applied by resolution: from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight,  Monday to Thursday, and until 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The piece excludes official holidays and the premises and tourist centers which qualify and are certified by Tourism from the schedule limits.

This is funny!!! Imagine it will be just like the seatbelt law when no cabs have seatbelts in the cars. ha ha Telling Dominicans not to drink on sidewalks or public is like telling Italians can no longer drink wine!

This is something that sounds good in (theory) but is terrible (in practice). With spillover costs (full jails).

They are not thinking about the tens of thousands of non-residents that do not hang out in the tourist zones but prefer barrios and public places.

Now, you telling me I can not drink cold Presidente and watch all and talk to many of the the pretty chicas walking by...? OMG, what is the RD coming to?

If I wanted to be in the USA on vacation then I would stay home and save alot more money doing so...

Maybe, I will have to copy Xwill7 and buy a Jeep to drink in...

They won't be putting anyone in jail for sipping a Presidente on the sidewalk.

It's just another official ruse to pry pesos from pockets. 2 years is as good an incentive to hand over your wallet as a gun in your face.

Up to 2 years but it doesn't mean they will actually sentence people to that. Most will probably get a citation or be charged with a simple misdemeanor just like here in the US. I'm so glad about this bill. It makes DR look uncivilized to foreigners and tourists when there's tigueres drinking openly on the streets. Good bye colmadones!!! Take your noisy drunken pimps and whores somewhere else!!!

This gov't is doing everything in its power to promote drug use!

All steps that have been taken, taxes, curfews, dui laws etc. have made it cheaper, easier and less consequential to use drugs than it is to enjoy an alcoholic beverage.

I have never understood why it is that we have all the police necessary to ensure night clubs and colmadones close @ the appropriate time, however the drug spots, and criminals have a free roam of the streets????

Good Job.

Great now they want to stop the Colmados from their biggest source of income. Also trying to bring back the time limit on drinking only lasted a few weeks last time. All show and no go we know how it works pay some bribes and your place stays open. We know the coffers are running low and our corrupt officials need to find a way to line their pockets because all their other scams aren't bringing in as much right now.

Public drinking on sidewalks with loud music is unacceptable and people need to understand that. However now that I think about it the 2 years maximum possible sentence is a little too harsh. I also think they should have more flexibility and allow municipalities to enforce it how they see fit. For example...a guy walking down the street drinking a beer but he's not drunk and disorderly = a warning or 500 peso fine. Someone on the street drinking but only slightly buzzed = same thing. Drunk but not disorderly = drunk tank for the night. Drunk and disorderly = arrest and charged with misdemeanor. Enforcing open container and public drinking/intoxication violations should be left to the discretion of the officers and depending how each municipality chooses to enforce the law. DR is still a work in progress and as it develops laws will be fairer and more reasonable. One thing is for sure though...no more colmadones with loud music and drunk booty-shaking hoochies anywhere!!!

The proceeds from this extortion plot will end up in the pockets of the petty officials who enforce these dumas laws just like the proceeds from the rest of their official sounding scams.

Passing this law is the equivalent of a hooker finding a new hole to sell or inventing a new position. It's just another wrinkle.

When the sales of President, Brugal getting less, meaning the Tax Dept. will collect less, meaning the Government will figure out again where to collect more taxes........

When there is no place can collect taxes from, then the "curb sidewalk drinking" law will be voided again, just like same case few years ago, at beginning, when Tax Dept. wanted to collect more taxes on Beers, ended up collected much less ., and later on, Taxes Dept. has to lower the taxes on the beers in order for them to collect more taxes.
