Santo Domingo.- Armed Forces minister Pedro Rafael Peña yesterday unveiled the first of three air surveillance radars bought for more than US$100 million from the Israeli defense electronics company IAI, whose executives and Air Force officers were present in the ceremony.

The official said this and the two other radars will be used to detect drug laden planes round the clock and will operate on a truck to be deployed according to need.

Technicians of the IAI subsidiary company Elta explained how to operate the equipment to the military officers present.

WHAT??

The sole purpose to get the radar is for detection. Now how do you decide where to "deploy"?

Anthonyc,
Nobody is ignorant, misinformed maybe but the only one ignorant is you!
Everyone has a right to an opinion and nobody especially you should even comment on who can and cannot comment on a topic unless you are a PLD stooge of course. And then naturally you will want to shut up everyone that does not follow a corrupt mainfesto that Leonel dictates.

@ROBERTOJOSE!!!

It's simple mathimatics. If the last article said that the radar(singular) cost $34million, that means that 3 radars(plural) is going to cost $112million which is correct... 3 radars are gonna cost OVER $100MILLION DOLLARS. What part of that didn't you understand.

PEOPLE, these are the next steps in battling drugtrafficking in the country. Its a positive move and a step in the right direction. Why must every comment be so negative. If they were doing nothing about the problem (as they have done for years) then the government would be critized for that. DAMNED IF YOU DO; DAMNED IF YOU DONT!!!

Tu-Papa,
The article is badly written to describe the actual cost.

As for the fight on drugs this is simply window dressing before an election. Leonel has done nothing to fight or address drug movements in the DR. He is mute on the subject and will look the other way nor will he comment..

Let me get this straight.

The US made the radar systems and gave them to Isreal so they could track all those rocks being thrown by the Palastinians. Now that the Isrealis have suppressed the Palastinians sufficiently through their blockade and irradication (settlements) noting that Obama seems to look the other way like all the rest. They can sell these same systems to a third world country (DR) for an extremely inflated price(since they were a gift in the first place). Bought with funds supplied by the US for "The war on drugs". Yep, that's pretty much it. No not yet, remember all these funds are borrowed by the US from China thus handcuffing future US generations with more debt.

I am thinking is there any broker involved? any under table commissions being paid? Because it is not cheap for 3 radars....

There are always commissions involved in DR... regardless of what type of works......

Hey TR,
Is down up?
Israel sells the most high tech armament because they possess intelligence, perseverance, apptitude, work ethic and genetic superiorty to nearly ever nation in the world. And the fact that they have been attacked three times by armies of Egypt, Syria and Jordan. The rock throwers are part of the story because the Arab world created a great problem by abandoning them at a time in need. And now you cry victim? Take your diaper off!! its been 60 years.
Accept Israel's right to exist, accept that if threatened as it has in three wars where they were attacked first, they will defend themselves appropriately, accept that the land which they inhabit was theirs from over 5000 years ago, accept the fact that the UN mandate gave them this country in 1948 and accept the notion that the Egyptians also control part of the blockade. Anyone complaining about them?
Most interesting is that Israel built it, USA paid for it and it is deployed in the DR.
I know it will work.

The desert people will always receive the soiled end of the stick .....Here why .............A fleeing Taliban desperate for water was plodding through the Afghanistan desert when he saw something far off in the distance.
Hoping to find water, he hurried toward 'the object' only to find a little old Jewish man at a small stand selling ties.
The Taliban asked, "Do you have water?"
The Jewish man replied, "I have no water. Would you like to buy a tie? They are only $5."
The Taliban shouted, "Idiot! I do not need an over-priced tie. I need water! I should kill you, but I must find water first! .........Continued

"O.K." said the old Jewish man, "it does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie and that you hate me. I will show you that I am bigger than that. If you continue over that hill to the east for about two miles, you will find a lovely restaurant. It has all the ice cold water you need. " Shalom".
Muttering, the Taliban staggered away over the hill.

Several hours later, almost dead and still dying of thirst he staggered back to the old Jew.
"Your brother won't let me in without a tie."

Two beggars are sitting on the pavement in Ireland. One is holding a large Cross and the other a large Star of David. Both are holding hats to collect contributions. As people walk by, they lift their noses at the guy holding the Star of David but drop money in the other guy’s hat. Soon one hat is nearly full whilst the other hat is empty.
A priest watches and then approaches the men. He turns to the guy with the Star of David and says, "Don't you realize that this is a Christian country? You'll never get any contributions in this country holding a Star of David."
The guy holding the Star of David then turns to the guy holding the Cross and says, "Hymie, look who's trying to teach us Marketing."

"Genetic superiority" was a former rallying cry in Nazi Germany to help motivate and foster pride onto the masses, I'm not so sure you would wish to identify with such an ignorant hyperbolic and unmeritous ARROGANCE.

P.S. "genetically superior" people should not need or want the subsidization of each and every single one of it's citizens by a foreign entity, a subsidization or "welfare" if you prefer that is being provided by "genetically inferior" people. Take the money but please lose the misguided pride, you can't have both.

Walnut,

I fully recognize that Jews are as a group great over achievers and have made lasting contributions the world over in many different facets. The Jewish legacy of social justice and binding self preservation are nothing but laudable. I have no issue with any of the Jewish peoples anywhere in the world but I do have a major issue as do many Jews with the Zionist government of Israel. I can respect your visceral defense of Israel but the premiss or idea that Israel only wants peace and does absolutely no wrong to that end while the murderous and treacherous Palestinians continue to victimize the peace loving Israeli government is the biggest load of crap that as ever been forced upon the American people. I find it too funny that you assail another poster about playing the victim role yet you step right up to your victim soapbox with nary a touch of self hypocrisy, how ironic.

Selective memory does a disservice to all. While I reject anti-Semitic diatribes and don't feel comfortable with ethnic jokes, the issues before us are not so clear and cut as you have suggested Walnut. There are those in Israel and largely in the States that promote a Greater Israel Project. To these numerous and powerful voices have been added millions of right-wing Christian Fundamentalist hell-bent on making possible the destruction of the Mosque in Jerusalem and the re-building of the 2nd Temple. All this would sound like some huge pie-in-sky script if it weren't for the massive capital and religious fervor surrounding this enterprise. Israel is a fact of life and is a small but powerful state. It's people well educated and living in a high consumption society. It does have an enormous debt to pay, but the USA helps finance it and as long as Israel does not go against our USA national Interests, no serious problems will arise in the relationship.

What most people do not remember, however, is that Eisenhower also dealt directly with Israel during this period, forcing the nascent state to bow down to U.S. national interests.

Eisenhower was already in his second term and had nothing to lose. Following the United Nations’ vote calling upon all invading armies to withdraw from Egyptian soil, he instructed acting Secretary of State Herbert Hoover Jr. to deliver a threat to Israel: The United States would cut all aid and encourage Israel’s expulsion from the United Nations if it did not abide by the General Assembly’s resolution.

Though many decision-makers in Israel were alarmed by the threat, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion reasoned that over time the world would grow used to Israel’s occupation of key strategic sites in the Sinai and instructed the military to withdraw slowly but to remain in the Gaza Strip and Sharam ash-Sheikh, a small town through which the Straits of Tiran are controlled. Three months after the United N

For too long the persisting nature and problem surrounding the ever growing population of the Palestinian people and the far less numerable but important Christian community have been poorly managed by Israel's leaders. And you point out the Three Wars against Israel but I see you make no mention of the 1956/7 WAR in which Israel, England and France instigated and were each summarily dealt the iron fist of the US President Eisenhower. The US Caesar forced each to withdraw their forces. Read the correspondences between Eisenhower and the Israelis Prime Minister at the time. Here's a summary of the key events:

" Congress on Jan. 5, 1957, in response to the Soviet Union’s efforts to make further inroads in the Middle East following the war. Eisenhower declared that the United States would not hesitate to use force if its vital interests were threatened by the Soviet Union and that countries taking a stance against communism would be granted aid in various forms.

Three months after the United Nations’ resolution and Mr. Hoover’s threat, Israel still occupied these areas.

Ben-Gurion went so far as to declare that Israel would not exit the Gaza Strip “even if the U.S. imposes sanctions,” and instructed the military to establish an administrative government in the region. He did not, however, take into account Eisenhower’s resolve.

Recognizing that Israel’s ongoing occupation of Egyptian land would jeopardize its own regional interests, the White House guaranteed Israel’s right to self-defense but demanded that it fully withdraw from all territories that had been seized during the Suez campaign. On March 6, 1957, Ben-Gurion finally bowed to U.S. pressure."

I will respect someone's opinion if all facts are made known.
For there ever to be peace, a lasting and fair one, the negotiating parties need to start with the premise that each has the right to exist, whatever boundary is established.
That, I am afraid, will never happen
And as likely as that is not to happen, neither will Israeli's return to 67 borders.
Like Catch 22.
Do the Israeli's make peace with just the PA? And then what about Hamas? They are killing the PA too. Oh, then Hizbollah.....all these socities are easy to logic and negotiate with.
Maybe in a Hollywood movie the ending is all neat and tidy.
This is just a small bit of our current world. See Sudan, China, pakistan,Iran, Iraq, Georgia, chechnya, last week in Afrika....many people, sometimes 100's and 100's a day are killed and there is little whimper.
I will share much of your criticism of the Zionists. When Israel is given the right to exist, much can happen.
Don't hold your breath.

If the problem is lack of will versus lack of logistical support and equipment, a better idea would be to give this money as incentives to the men of the agencies that are responsible for eradicating this criminal element. I read on these pages last week where an entire narcotics division of a town were aiding the drug dealers, you can only fight money, with money. Making it financially lucrative to stop this scourge is certainly a radical idea but what else has worked?
