Santo Domingo.- Ex president Hipólito Mejía yesterday warned that he’ll not protect any official of his Administration (2000-2004) who may be involved in the case of the Puerto Rican murder convict Jose Figueroa Agosto arrested in San Juan on Saturday.

The former chief executive, whose Presidential helicopter “slept” next to the chopper owned by the drug trafficker Quirino Paulino in the San Isidro Air Force Base during his term in office, said Figueroa’s arrest deals a hard blow to Dominican Republic’s drug trafficking.

Mejía had criticized what he views as an easy escape by Figueroa and his Dominican paramour Sobeida Felix out of the country, and challenged the authorities to clarify how they were able to flee.

He said the arrests make many people in the country nervous, who fear that the entire truth will surface in the United States. “Those things are going to be known because there’s no way to stop them, and the good thing is they were caught alive, they didn’t kill them beforehand.”
