Santo Domingo.- Education minister Melanio Paredes on Tuesday announced that the 2010-2011 school year will begin Tuesday, August 17 and told the parents that they must abide by the educative calendar so that the “Mission 1000 X 1000” is effective.
The official urged the parents to send their children to the public and private schools, so they can take full advantage of the school year.
He said without the parents’ help there’s no way education can work because they are needed together with the teachers and school directors.

Why not start it on a Monday?
Everybody knows that most parents keep their kids home the first incomplete week, because they think that nothing is being taught in a shortened week.

This is so stupid, first we have to wait until they decide when the school year will end for it to be over and now we have to wait and find out that the school year will begin on Aug 17. They have no lack of consideration for the parents, these things should be announced at the appropriate time. When the school year starts we should know first hand when it will end and when it ends we should know when the next school year starts. This is what happens when you get a bunch of non skilled directors running the show. My poor country that's what is will always be as long as you get clowns like these running the show.
And he wants all parents to abide by the school calander. Well if you lets us know at the end of the last school year when the next one starts maybe we can plan their vacation around it. Not on 2 weeks notice you dum!a$$

Schools often start on a Tuesday overseas..it is so the teachers can get everything ready on the Monday ..in some countries private and public schools start on different days ,,all my youngsters knew the date of restarting weeks ago so looks like a communications breakdown ..well I have said many times before that organisation is not the trump suit for Dominicans ..I doubt if any one much worries if the children arrive on Tuesday , Wednesday or Thursday ,,,bit like asking Dominicans for dinner at 8.00 on Tuesday ,,they arrive between 9 and 11 and some times the next day or week

As a person who went to school in DR i can assure you that date and times when school starts and end and holiday are well known to parents that care about their child's education. My parents knew exactly when we had days off in school when the year end and started. Maybe you should had pay more attention to the schedule because I couldn't never pulled "my teacher is getting marry" to my parents as an excuse to having a day off school. Education involves 3 things.
1.a good school
2. a student
3. a responsible parent/s
all of those things put together equals a good education system. I can assure you my kids don't need to tell me the school year schedule because I already know it before them at times.

makes no difference whether or not school starts on christmas day. my buddy teaches school, and he says there is no day when the entire class attends. one kid is always at abuelas house, or doing a diligencia, or has the gripe. school is a pastime. baby sitting, while mommy goes to the playa with Amarilys.

School is starting on tuesday aug. 17 instead on monday aug 16 because, monday is a holiday

So true Dread and here we can agree. The culture of learning while a nature urge in humans is in its institutionalized academic form a function of family and government encouragement and investment. Our past governments have failed miserably to provide the infrastructure for a good education: Buildings, supplies and well trained teachers. Families are often the worst enemies of their child's education. They seldom foment and motivate, perhaps because they themselves weren't taught otherwise, and adequately encourage their child's academic and intellectual curiosities.

This task is a very difficult one to change in society, it took Puerto Rico some 20+ years, but DR's future is largely dependent on breaking this cycle of poor academic achievement. LF and those that will come after him must engage this fundamental problem, because DR will never achieve its great potential unless her people are far better educated and can contribute to enriching the nation's cultural and intellectual space.

I teach part time at two poor schools ,,not yet notified officially about 17th start ..and i find that the children generally love their time at school, but they are often so tired and just fall to sleep very easily between classes and sometimes in class .
Junglemonkey ..yes it is Restoration Day ..which actually falls on the Sunday ,but as that already is a holiday for most , Monday becomes another holiday !! que buen pais

There is an article I read recently that gave evidence to support the theory that children in general do not get enough sleep, many adults too fail to get enough. Families need to set and instill good time management. Children need something like 10-11 hours of sleep per day. Perhaps a national information campaign to alert parents of these facts needs to be made, the schools should have parents sign-off on this important issue. Poor sleeping patterns yield poor academic results in school. The study also measured athletic results and found that performance was enhanced if athletes had more sleep before competition and training. Adults need on average 8 hours of sleep.

get out the licking sticks, and i do not care. i am saying it, anyway. too many adults here have a problem differentiating between themselves and children. they think like kids, and believe that the kids and themselves are the same animal. so, women and their daughters hang out in bars as if they were two school buddies. they let the kids stay up until midnight, knowing full well that tomorrow is a school day. when i was 10 years old, i had to be in bed by a certain hour, and my mother made me say my prayers and turn out the lights by 9pm. a little draconian, perhaps, but it worked. that is the difference between a household run by adults, and one in which everyone is a child.

On this issue we are in total agreement Dread. My mom had a policy bath by 8, in bed by 8:30, and lights out by 9. By High School I had been conditioned and little parental oversight was needed. Sadly, in DR too many folks allow some serious mistreatment and its a form of child abuse in my view to take place.

in the DR, too many people refuse to act like adults..that is what i am getting at. your kids are not going to love you any less if you send them to bed at a reasonable hour, and teach them that they are children. i went to a Dominican party in manhattan some years back, and it was a mix of adults , and little kids. some of the 10 year old types were dancing in the most sexually suggestive ways, and the adults were roaring with glee. made me wonder which planet i was on.

It's a cultural divide dread. Mainly consisting of farmers and rural people and those that have recently left their rural confines for the cities. Not all rural people engage in this abysmal practice, but many do. Having young children engaged in loud and sexually suggestive dance with adults contributes to attitudes and practices ill suited to instilling good fundamentals for academic success and the management of family affairs. It will take many years to change these practices, and often a long stay in a first world environment offers the best medicine for modifying these poor practices. That's why I favor immigration to the US, Europe, Canada, etc. In general, the generations improve because faced with organized practices many are forced to change.
From: United States
cultural divide is right. i am sure that 10 year old kids in Japan or Korea do not grind up against 11 year old boys at a family gathering, simulating sexual congress. we are still in the stone age when it comes to family management.

It seems that Dreadlocks and Atabey come from privileged backgrounds ..the children that I teach come from homes where there are up to 8 people sleeping in 3 very small bedrooms with no more than 3 beds ,,it is often so hot they cannot sleep , they are bitten all night by mosquitos and they can not take relief by going outside because they live in barrios full of delinquencia . These poor people live like animals
They have their first sex when they are about 12 often , maybe usually, with a family member , Sleep and essential hygiene are essential for any person ,,what can be done I do not know
From: United States
i know very many poor people who still are able to discipline their children, despite material poverty. i di not know that you had to be privileged to be in bed by 9pm, at age 10. thanks for the info, Ricardolito.
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
I was not trying to be rude ,,it is just that in many poor barrios , the bedrooms are so hot and oppressive at 9 , there is normally no electricity and water only every second day ,that the children can not possibly sleep ..and most of my students are from single parent families where discipline is more difficult .
I think that it was wonderful for you to be able to be in bed at 9 ,,maybe privileged was the wrong choice of word ,,maybe fortunate is better . I was in institutions from the age of 6 to 22 ,where a cane or short whip was the discipline given and we all had many hours of sleep .
