Santo Domingo.- National District prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso and Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) director Jose Sanz Jiminián on Wednesday warned that all military, police and civilians who run the red light and drive motorcycles without a plates and helmets, will be detained and taken before a judge who’ll slap the fines as the Law stipulates.

They said the civilians will be taken before a judge whereas the military or agents will be jailed for 30 days, according to memos issued by the Armed Forces Ministry and the National Police.

Sanz called motorists who ignore red lights “criminals,” and revealed that 900 motorcycles have been impounded for lack of documents. He warned bikers that they can ride with only one passenger per trip.

Moscoso and Sanz also warned that drivers caught with tinted windshields will be required to remove it and pay a fine, and those who stage races will be arrested.

They also issued a deadline of 15 days, starting Monday, to the owners of the hundreds of impounded and unclaimed vehicles to retrieve them in the El Coco greyhound track, or be sold in auction.

"We want more bribes" would have been a better headline. Does anyone actually believe that Military, Police, or anyone with 100 pesos in their pocket is going to be given a ticket.

I for one would love to see it, but it is hard to imagine it really happening. I hope it does.

DR is always in a fantasy talking without knowing it's actual capacity to reach the fantasy.

This will happen:
1. More bribe as Juanb said.
2. Where are the cells ? Where are the food? Judge?.......etc.
3. After few weeks, it will stop again. Because it is not feasible.

Officials are so ignorant and talk like stupid ass Holxx, so what are you expecting more from them?

Everyone wants change but then complain when someone tries to actually initiate change. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step-Chinese proverb

Well late night is not good to stop at any red light in DR... If no cars are coming, are you going to wait for the light to change green or for the crook to car jack you?

If they really meant to do this it would certainly be a change for the better. The standards of driving, both cars and motos, is unbelievable low. No one seems to have a licence to drive or ever taken a driving test and the few that did admit they paid to pass the test. Having said that if they impound every vehicle being driven in violation of the law they will need a hell of a large place to store them!

Adrian ..welcome I love your town and especially la Catelina nearby .
You have to have some form of tinting in the back seat as xwill7 says to keep some things hidden but not the front windscreen or the back window nor the drivers or front passenger window ,,but really what Domican driver ever looks behind or into his side mirror when pulling out or passing !!
Nearly every family in la Romana , a wife and a baby sit behind the husband driving a bike ..you have to permit 3 people .
Motor bikes should have plates ,,,they are usually stolen quickly however and is better to have papers with the matching ID of the bike painted or scratched on the bike. approximately 2 % of bike users wear a helmet ..we need a special tropical one .
I agree that stopping at a red light is important but there is no way that I will stop long at a red light in a dangerous barrio ...that has more danger than a potential fine .
, I would prefer more emphasis on dangerous driving and drunken driving

I would prefer to concentrate on offences that have the potential to injure or kill other people ...not so worried about a bike driver hurting himself ,,but drunk, speeding and dangerous drivers need to be caught

The government has missed an opportunity on this one. They should include vehicles that do not have functioning lights, bald tires, and smoky emissions.

Ricardolito....La Catalina and especially the hotel is very nice! I agree it is the dangerous, drunk, speeding. no lights etc. drivers that need to be taken off the road.

They already impounded 900 vehicles! Hey, that's a cool million.

And more to come, that's why they're staging this show.

No public interest here. Strictly business.

YES U ARE CORRECT SAD BUT THIS LAW IS FOR THEIR SAFTEY. SAD THE PUBLIC DOES NOT THINK TWICE ABOUT THIS. WHEN THE BIKE GETS HIT OR GOES DOWN U KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WITH SO MANY ON BOARD.
THE LAW IS GOOD BUT I GUESS NO ONE WHATS THEM. DO WHAT EVER U WANT TO DO WHEN U WANT TO DO IT.
GREAT WAY TO RUN A COUNTRY.

if every one would stop for the lights the trafice who be better for all.
not every one can be 1st? how can they ?.... slow down most are going no where anyway many cant or dont know how to drive and then they get drunk man thats not a good thing is it?

well today I was silly enough to stop at some red lights in la Romana and was waiting patently but all the cars and trucks behind were going crazy and blowing their horns ,,,an AMET man waved me on against the red light just as a car on my right was speeding to catch his green light ,,now I was thinking that I was almost killed for obeying a light and an AMET man ..

guys, lighten up. this is the third world we are discussing, here. it is not america, where you first study a book on road code, then take a written test, then your road test. here , you go to an escuela de choferes for 2 weeks, so you learn to get the car rolling. then you seek out a buscone, fork over some loot, and, presto, macho. you are a licensed driver! matters not that you do not know the rules of placement at a round about. that is inconsequential. when you crash, you can always say it is the other guys fault.
