Defense lawyers claim those aren’t their identities

Santo Domingo.- Nicknames such as El Loco (crazy), Toro Bravo (mad bull), El Grande the Big One), among others have stalled the hearing in the trial of the case Paya, when defense lawyers claimed that those aren’t their identities.

As the prosecution was about to present evidence against the 22 accused in the august, 2008 execution of seven Colombians, the lawyers for Noe Sterling Villalón, (Chalupa) or the El Loco, son of outgoing Barahona senator Noe Sterling Vásquez, motioned the National District 3rd Collegiate Court to prohibit the prosecution from using those nicknames, prompting the judges Alina Mora, Natividad de los Santos and Rafael Pacheco to retire to chambers.

After deliberating again from a similar motion, the judges returned and ruled against the defense.

Assistant prosecutor Francisco Polanco said the defense sought to stall the process with “insignificant incidents” aimed at halting what he called a “definitive” conviction.

Many of the 22 indicted have nikcnames including Pedro González Estévez (Chicho), Joaquín Félix Pérez, (Colorao), Quilvio Santana Féliz, (El Chivo), the ex sargent Reudy Manuel Encarnación (Yery), the ex coronel Miguel Peña Guerrero (Peñita), the ex sargento Antonio Manuel Roche Pineda (Quico), Yaneuris Manuel Calvo (El Grande), Domingo Onésimo Marmolejos (One, or El Ingeniero), Gilson Antonio González, (Toro Bravo), Horín Clinton Gómez (West), José Luis Montás (El Duro Motors) and Luis de Jesús Lara Martínez (El Churro or El Azuano).

Let me make sure I understand this.

Some men have commonly known nick names and their lawyers say that those aren't their names and the trial is stopped for this? You couldn't make this stuff up.

In most countries the prisoners and their lawyers would be held in contempt of court and sentenced ..that may not worry the prisoners who are facing a life time in prison but may cause the defence lawyers to conduct themselves better.

in correct english ..defence is the noun and defense is the verb ..americans tend to use defense for both . ..there are other words that are more complicated in proper english ,,,sentance and sentence being one, which the americans prefer to ignore ,Similarly americans have eliminated 90% of the english adverbs so that the letters LY at the end of an adjective tend to be ignored (can you imagine spanish adverbs without the MENTE)
It actually annoys me so much that I do not read any american writer after James Baldwin ..even Henry James , who spent most of his first 30 years in New York before moving to Europe has some aggravating word structures.
I survive in the DR , by being accompanied by the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and the Oxford Book of English Romantic Poems ..that together with Elgar, Coward and Chopin on CD is a life in heaven !!! albeit un cielo caribe

Thank you for the correction. I never knew.

Although thinking about it, how do you use defense as a verb. Defend I can understand, but defense?

YES it was a bad example but the principle is the same ,,,better examples are licence (noun) and to license (verb), advice (noun) and to advise (verb) and so it goes on ,,I will think of more as the day goes on .

Nickey the Hat has learned his lesson by condemning Miss Dominican Prison 2010 without one word being heard in a court ..he is saying nothing nothing in this case but is hoping that the Church will have it.s own courts again soon to put such people as these to the burning post
