SANTO DOMINGO.- National Police spokesman Nelson Rosario denied Friday that his boss Rafael Guzmán is a friend of the Spaniard Arturo del Tiempo, who’s being held in his country on drug trafficking charges, but admitted they had played golf together.

When reporters asked him about an apartment in the Torre Atiemar, property of del Tiempo, Rosario said it was Guzman’s father who acquired it.

As to the relation of friendship between and Guzmán and the drug trafficking suspect, the Police spokesman said it went only as far as del tiempo being issued an ID as an “honorary police” of the country.

The fiancée of del Tiempo’s son, Ruth Sanchez Vargas, has described the Police Chief as the Spaniard’s friend, and that they’ve spent time together in Casa de Campo, including close relatives and friends of both.

Under interrogation by Justice Ministry investigators, Sanchez revealed that the senior official and del Tiempo “managed to forge a close relationship” and that Guzmán “was going to buy an apartment there”, in the Torre Atiemar.

Yes because “honorary police” titles are handed out to total strangers. Get your “honorary police” title at your next AMET stop. Get them while they last.

Both Nelson Rosario and Rafael Guzmán feel they can lie to our faces and nobody can do anything about. He gave him an "honorary police" ID and they are not good friends? Nobody believes this crap and that ID card as well as these denials shows the guilt for anyone looking. High ranking police officials do not give out "honorary police" IDs to just anyone. I hope the press does a search to see first how many of these IDs have been handed out and who has them. This will give a better picture of how important this drug dealer was to Guzmán and possibly some of the other key players we need to look at next.

It is time for LF to step up for the people. Who else can stand up against the leader of the PN and not end up dead for doing it.

At this point whether or not the Chief is guilty of more than he claims is really besides the point. The mere act of his association with the drug lord, an association that provided for real estate deals, golf outings and special honorary designations are more than enough to impede the Chief from the day to day continuation of his responsibilities. The best option for the country is his immediate resignation.

DEVIN I hope that the chief of police does resign but I also do not want to make any false accusations. You have to remember that del Tiempo was regarded in the Dominican republic as a very important and respectable person and on the basis of his yacht , his cars , his house and his investment in the tower in the capital ,it is easy to see why he was feted by all the Dominican authorities, not just the police chief, and at the time of the golf game and the offer to buy an apartment in the tower ,del Tiempo had not been exposed as a drug dealer .
However, as Veronica wisely suggests , there is an immediate need to see who gets these honorary police designations and I imagine that the list may be interesting ..it is on this point that the police chief may come undone.
In many countries, the police chief would be stood aside pending such investigations but obviously not here..I imagine that the President´s office is looking closely at this event but do not necessarily report to DT .

Ric,
I understand you completely but with the full scale corruptive realities within the police forces where entire divisions in local precincts have been dislodged you cannot have the top man in this situation defending his innocence while he maintains his day to day responsibilities. He should resign and defend his innocence from outside the official parameters of his duties.

did anyone hear the 'minister" of public health, bautista Rojas, is subject to 10 years in jail for the illegal contact with his sister. Someone told me it was on local news a couple of nights ago, but of course, since LF determines what is in papers, there has been nothing. Take him, the police chief, LF, use stolen money to buy giant toilet, and het FLUSH!

If he were a Sargent, he'd be suspended and maybe locked up.

If we were another country (I mean the rule of law type), he would have resigned on his own at the first opportunity.

I we were in China, he would have committed suicide for losing face.

Here, just shower up, put on a clean shirt and the stupid smile, and business as usual.

Good for what, Factor? This is what is wrong with the DR, no accountablilty ! If you and most other Dominicans choose to look the other way, so be it, but please don't come crying to others, such as the spineless LF does continiously, with hand outstreched, asking for funds (loans) or something free. The DR is hopeless with little honor.
