President Fernandez's second official visit to the White House.
WASHINGTON.- US president Barack Obama will receive Dominican Republic par Leonel Fernandez in the White House in an unspecified hour on Monday, an official source revealed to the AFP on Friday, a meeting many local analysts expect would thaw Washington’s historical cool relations with the leader of the Caribbean nation.
Fernandez’s schedule also includes a luncheon in the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on Tuesday, the news organization said.
Santo Domingo established a close coordination with Washington to funnel aid to Haiti after the January quake, after which Fernandez has led the call for the international community to pledge assistance and make good on its promise.
But Fernandez’s coziness with Latin America’s leftists -first by establishing diplomatic ties with Havana in 1997 and recent dealings with Hugo Chavez- has earned him Washington’s cold shoulder, as evidenced by foot-dragging in Capitol Hill in the designation of an ambassador in Santo Domingo in all but two years of his 10 years in office.

Don't write LF's obituary so fast; he serves US interests in the most important sense: helping manage the Haitian Problem. As long as he does so, a little free lancing with leftist, like Chavez and et al, will not harm LF. And while Costa Rica got some sugar quota market, DR needs to concentrate on diversifying its export base pronto. Hopefully, LF and his people are able to get some US interests in solving the energy mess in DR, and helping promote Western and Eastern capitalist investments for the DR. Washington's help in facilitating these developments are not as unfruitful as might first appear. For DR sake, let's hope LF is able to get as much as possible out of this meeting. I sense something positive coming out of his trips to Germany and the US.
