SANTIAGO.- Santiago’s current Administration will leave a RD$1.8 billion debt with different companies and individuals accumulated during it’s tenure of the last 8 years.

Mayor elect Gilberto Serulle made the revelation in a press conference yesterday, and affirmed that he’ll take the reins of a virtually "bankrupt" city on August 16.

“The City Council informed our technicians that the debt ranges from RD$1.6 billion and RD$1.8 billion, regrettably the current municipal management has refused to reveal the debt’s exact amount.”

He said several companies and suppliers have placed liens on City Council accounts due to delays in the payment of accumulated debts.

The Mayor elect asked those companies to lift the liens after August 16, to let City Hall meet its financial commitments.

Serulle also affirmed that several companies in Santiago and Santo Domingo pledged to provide credit for works and projects during the first 100 days, including an ambitious garbage collection plan “because the city has been abandoned during the transition.”

And what will happen to Sued?

What is his punishment for this malfeasance?

There is talk that he will be promoted to head the Municipal League, where he will have access to some really big money. Reportedly Sued spent 800,000RD on baseball tickets last year, paid millions to his family for no show jobs, etc. Wait until you see what he does now that he can really wheel and deal.

Almost laughable.
However, almost all elected officials give patronage jobs to their friends and spend enormous amounts of money on entertaining the entourage.
Here in the DR, the amounts are so staggering to cause a municipality to go bankrupt.

Is there a remedy? LF hasn't the authority to stop this nonsense, either.
Criminal action needs judicial response. Lock him up!!!!

It is standard practice for an incoming mayor or officer to blame the people he replaced for everything ..no matter what . So I imagine that things are not quite as bad as made out ...Nevertheless ,the outgoing administration needs to be held to account if there is any criminal negligence .

And Santiago being broke is perfectly in line with what is happening in the rest of the country.

So, I guess more commissions and Camara de cuentas audits, to be followed by Depreco's press releases, and then, well, nothing as usual.

What a disgraced. This is what is left to our once great Gem of el cibao. The problem is that our crooks politician takes their usual piece but there is another problem in the mix right now. There have to be more than half a million Haitians in the city. Those people get free hospital and their kids get free education, ect. The money they earn go back to Haiti. You add everything up and this is what is left. A city in ruin.

Oh. FInished polishing LF's jewels?

He came out just in time to offer the standard government drivel:

Nothing is ever bad in his world. Must be nice to be a connected flunky.

And you forgot to add my favorite:

not worth the effort to debate with those who can supply no evidence to support their statements ...just ranting the same thing every time .

Of course, that is what people who cannot defend their statements, or those of the regime that they support so wholeheartedly, usually say

Something must be done to get the Santiago Puerta Plata areas advancing better ,,,they are a drag on the rest of the country at present with no tourists, no jobs , no shoppers and no life ,all this reported by the northern scribes here . maybe the rail from the capital will help.
It would be good to have some positive ideas thrown up here instead of simply trying to pass the blame for having a rotten mayor .

Here's a positive idea;

STFU with your lies and your progovernment propaganda.

To recap you lies today:

1) Sued was probably just misunderstood, and not a crook.
2) Those of us in Santiago (where75%of the people working in the free zones are out of work) and the north shore resorts are a drag on the otherwise extremely healthy and vibrant economy.

All I can say is (to quote the biggest BS artist that posts here) :

not worth the effort to debate with those who can supply no evidence to support their statements ...just ranting the same thing every time .

i suppose when there are 75% out of work and the national average is around the 15 or 16 % mark ..you do not think that Santiago is a drag on the national economy ..Thank you for the figure which just proves what I wrote .
Now, I do not know if your mayor that the voters from Santiago voted in was a crook or not but if it is proved that he was, then he can go to prison in your area . It is your mismanaged city so do not bleat to everyone of a problem that is yours ..maybe you should just ponder why your city and your area has gone so down hill and seek to correct the problem ..
You write all the time about your area and the fact that it is overrun with poor children from Haiti , there are no jobs, no shoppers , no one to rent shops, no tourists and the prices are going through the roof . You , yourself have painted the picture , no one else
If you lived in the capital or the east , you would see a different story ..maybe tell us why ??

vacanos...now you know what the americans feel like with 10-15 million mexicans illegal in the US. Cheap work, no health care insurance and have babies like rabbits that ARE americans once born in the US. No easy way when what DR has, however little, is 100X more than Haiti.

Gilberto Serulle is the best chance of any P.R.D politician of becoming President!!!! The fact that he is going be governing the second largest city and if he does a very good job (like I think he is going to) will give him a record to run on. I believe he is the future of the P.R.D although I don't even know if he is an official member but regardless he is there best shot period!!!!!!! Miguel Vargas & Meja have no chance in HELL to win an election they represent chaos and more corruption.
