SANTO DOMINGO.- Senate president Reinaldo Pared on Tuesday desisted from pushing through a 50,000 peso wage hike for his colleagues, but noted that it will be necessary to readjust” them at future some time to fix what he calls a distortion, that the deputies now make more than the senators.
Perez, despite the wide rebuke the proposal drew nationwide, pointed to the Congress’ little-known Social Prevision Institute, which he affirms has “complained” of the distortion, because those lawmakers’ salaries haven’t increased in the last four years. "It’s a fact that the pensioned senators make less than the pensioned deputies, then it’s a distortion that has been created, but I decided to discard this increase anyway, but sooner or later it’ll have to be done."
The First Lady Margarita Cedeño was among those in society who rejected the Senate president’s wage increase proposal, calling it as unacceptable and which comes after the lawmakers from both chambers also drew rebuke for the use of the slush fund “barrilito” (little barrel) of as much as RD$400,000 monthly.

IT would be more acceptable to everyone in the country if the deputies reduced their wages to the level of the senators than the senators increase theirs ,,,and even more acceptable if in the next election areas were amalgamated so there were only 100 deputies. Then there would be less tax increases.

Senators want to raise their basic salaries from RD$125,000 to RD$175,000, according to Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez. Hoy writes that the senators receive a basic wage of RD$125,000 per month, representation for RD$50,000, RD$25,000 in per diems, accommodation for RD$25,000 and a RD$3,500 per diem per work session.
Hoy reports that when representation expenses are added, per diems, accommodation and other perks, plus wages paid to staff of the senators the total comes closer to RD$2.3 million a month, or RD$27.5 million a year per individual. This includes the additional "barrilito" or slush fund that ranges from RD$450,000 to RD$1 million and is used at each senator's discretion. There are 32 senators. All senators, with the exception of Amable Aristy Castro of the PRSC, belong to the ruling PLD party.

continued....
The argument for the increase is that the legislators' wages are low compared to other government officials. Another justification is that the senators make less than the deputies. "The increase is necessary because the deputies cannot make more than the senators," said Senator Wilton Guerrero (PLD-Peravia) when interviewed on 16 August.
Read that carefully. Not only do the deputies make more of a base salary, but these greedy bas--rds are complaining that government officials are making more as well. More than $700,000 per year. I have previously said that we have the highest paid public officials in the world.
A certain, not to be named, professional government subsidized poster has asked for proof. Well, here it is.

Why not adjust their salaries and perks to those of our main trading partner, the US?
That should be included in the next agreement with the IMF under "adjusments".
Another thing: nobody should be allowed in public service without at least a first cycle university degree in matters relevant to public administration.
Too many functional illiterates in public offices.

here's a crazy idea for correcting the "distortion" - LOWER THE DEPUTIES' SALARY!!!

If the deputies make more we should wake up and make some real changes. The amount of money we spend on corrupt officials is out of control. Political office should not mean steal from the people.Until we hold our officials accountable for what they do nothing will change. Follow the money it's as simple as that.

I agree with Walter , did you know that there are income restrictions to be a gov. official?
You have to have at lest like a few million in the bank and prove it to be put on the ballot, yet they don't have any educational requeirments, lol
What a F-ing joke.
the worst thing is that they are doing this to their own people!!
They are treating the country as their own bodega, coje aqui, quita alla.
I'd rather see the country in the hands of the US than these fucking morons, I'm sorry i'm usually not belligerent but i'm so sick of this.
the senators haven't even sat in their chairs and they are already talking about giving themselves a raise?!!
What about the minimum wage does that get a raise too?
