PRESS RELEASE

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – An alien from the Dominican Republic appeared this morning before US District Court, Chief Magistrate Judge Justo Arenas, facing charges of fraud and misuse of visas, permits, and other documents.

Late Sunday night US Customs and Border Protection officers arrested Carlos Antonio Romano during a pre-flight inspection at the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, during boarding of a flight bound to New York.

Mr. Romano provided CBP officers a Puerto Rico driver’s license and a Social Security card, issued to “Efrain Perez-Rivera”, claiming to be a US citizen and the rightful bearer of the documents.

CBP officers referred the passenger for closer inspection, where further examination revealed his real name was Carlos Antonio Romano.

CBP Enforcement Officers presented the case to the Immigration Unit of the United States Attorney’s Office, which accepted the case for prosecution.

Assistant United States Attorney Evelyn Canals will prosecute the case.

If convicted the defendant faces a fine or a sentence not more than 15 years or both.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Inmigration laws should be enforced, but 15 years for using false documents to reach the US in hopes of providing a better life for one's family is kind of harsh.

Mexicans and other south americans cross into the US every day many of them with false documents and all they get is a return trip.

He won't get 15 years. If this is his first time offense, he won't get any time but he will have to remain in the island throughout the process which could last up to 6 months. Few make the trip back to Puerto Rico again. They become extremely traumatized by the experience and know that if they get caught again, it will be way worse than the first time. People travel to Puerto Rico first to then come to New York.

I love my country but to call it Shangri-La is an extreme. I prefer the land of opportunity. You have to work hard to make but you will succeed if you have tenacity.

Send them back. Protect your borders. We should start sending some illegals back too, but our president has no BALLS, our country is a joke. THANK YOU LEONEL FERNANDEZ NEMA.
