Santo Domingo.– After dozens of youngsters fell ill for unknown reasons, international health officials began monitoring free school breakfasts given to poor students in Dominican public schools.

According to Anselmo Aburto, a nutrition consultant for the Pan American Health Organization, several U.N. agencies began monitoring the meals on Monday to ensure youngsters don't get sick now that they are again getting subsidized milk, juice, bread and puree.

The problem started in February, when about 40 students fell ill at a school in the northern region. In March, 42 students fell sick at another school in a town northwest of the capital, and in April, 56 students at a third school in a northern town were sickened.

Leonel at his best. They should do as they do in China.
Who tainted the product and then send the bill for the bullet to the family.

The dominican republic sits on a large TAB and the only way that the schools receives any monies is from HANDOUTS and not the dominican government but from other entities. Its obvious that the president has other important items on his agenda. Like taking pictures in other parts of the world to add to his FACEBOOK account.....Why is it when it comes to ours schools, there has to be an outside source to make thing better. The dominican government(President) says one thing and acts on another.

If leonel were to take 2million dollars from every loan he borrowed for the dominican republic and instead of keeping it, actualy uses it to better our schools, he would be a good president................Naaah, who am I kidding, Leo is a HOSEBAG.

How can the UN monitor the meals that will be given to children in the Dominican Republic, when the UN can’t take care of bigger problems all around the world?

With so many children getting sick from the meals that they are being given you would think that OUR OWN government would have enough interest in the children's well being to resolve this problem on their own.

But then again, the Senators and Deputies are too busy selling off our land at 10% of their real value, or figuring out some other way to line their pockets and our President is only interested in looking for photo ops. So I guess it makes sense that we are looking for someone else to protect us from ourselves.

From the "It Must Be So" Dept.:

From today's Hoy:

Alburquerque: Gobierno LF ha mejorado inversión salud y educación

It must be so, a government official wouldn't lie, would he?

The government is so corrupt that small school children from a disadvantaged area are getting sick, yet La Gorda wife of Leonel keeps gaining weight.

This sounds fishy....maybe someone from the US tainted the milk not a Dominican in order to get the contract. I mean, where is the new breakfast coming from?? Who is subsidizing it?? US??
So this means our local producer lost this important account?? isn't it true???

It is amazing how the President gets the blame from all of you for this? The blame for this falls on the local admistrator in the areas where problems exist. The fact that the Govenment offers these meals is a good thing.

You people have your head up your ass and don't want to see what is going on.
You deserve the crap the DR government dishes out. Pathologically corrupt is the norm for the day.

It is a government agency that decides who provides these meals. I don't know how it is decided who gets the contract, but is there anything done here that is above suspicion?

Would you be surprised to learn that the management of the company providing the meals decided to not give the food the same attention, refridgeration, and care that they gave the products sold at retail at full price? We will never know, but I wouldn't be surprised. Retail customers are going to complain and stop buying their products. Innocent kids are just going to get sick, and the attitude of too many Dominicans will be, "what are they complaining about, the food is free?"

JonJon,

The president must know whats going on and his ability to put this on the backburnner is sickening. The dominican republic needed an overhaul of its educational system before Lee-FLEA became president, as amatter of fact this was part of his campaign when he visited FREEPORT, to better the education of the dominican republic........and you say he isn't the one to blame. Who else but the president can tell these politicians what to do and how to do it. The problem is that leo dosn't have the nazz to do something, but he has the balls to request more money to pay off the electric bill after borrowing exactly what is owed in the first place, not only did he ask for more ,but he didn't even explain fully what happened to the initial 1/2 of a billion USD given to him.

all that goes wrong in the dr. is attributed to a lack of education.

the old- marxist-leninist scrpit.
the aggressive plunder of the yanqui empire, the horror of the greedy capitalists.

uncle sam sits around the white house all day thinking of a way to make the children sick in the dr. sick and how uncle sam can make a few dollars doing this.

juanb,

I see no reason why this news should be anything but good news for the children in DR. I mean if the people who should monitor the daily lunches are doing a poor job, then having UN inspectors should help clear this up. So why are so many against this? I understand that most people want DR officials to meet modern standards and all. I do too, but remember this is DR we're talking about. A nation that has still not solved its energy problem, potable water and sanitation issues. And on top of all that, the nation has a huge Haitian migration population to deal with. A massive population that has even more problems than our own population. I see this as a positive for the children and the nation. Now if this problem persist and we're talking about the same set-up in say 5 years time, I'll say this is a giant fiasco on the part of the government or State.

And the above is a very smart remark danny -.000!?

I mean, it's great that the baseball players are doing so a great job, but, to keep running a foundation and it's deeds take a lot of people and volunteers, in this case is normally short term.

But to say there is not reason to worry!!!! What are you five years old????????

First of all Danny -.0000000
If you think that when an international organization brings products from out side instead of using the locally grown or produced food is a great idea, I need not to talk to you because you are obviously…..incapacitated to think.

If the UN really wants to help they should bring a team to test the food and find where and how the food got tainted.

The UN World Health Organization have been doing a great job in the teaching of iodine salt requirements and need to the 3rd world.

And it is a good thing. Maybe we are not as informed as we should, but, the UN shoudl train the DR inspectors, not just take over.

It is good there is some outside oversight of the program. However, the UN does not have the resources to monitor the entire country

The government would better serve the program with prepackaged meals, such as MRE's, meals ready to eat, that are sanitary and have a long shelf life; rather than indulge vendors preparing meals in questionable conditions.

The reason for the sickness in the schools to the north of the capital may be the result of poor refrigeration of the food ..it has been known that electricity failures do occur from time to time .
