Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic has been classified in the third tier among  the worst in competitiveness, according to the World Economic Forum ranking for 2010-2011.

According to the Forum, the country dropped four points compared with last year, and fared better than only five Latin American countries, among them Venezuela, Paraguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Nicaragua.

The Forum’s classifications take into account the available public data, a survey of opinion among executives, its annual comprehensive analysis, and the network of collaborating Institutes that work in the reported countries.

Chile is Latin America’s top classifier at 30, followed by Puerto Rico (41), Barbados (43), Panama (53), Costa Rica (56), Brazil (58), Uruguay (64), and Colombia (68).

The analysis of 139 countries placed Switzerland as top classifier, followed by Sweden and Singapore, with the United States in fourth place.

A Sad Story ......This must improve or the future is bleak

These stories must be lies. Leonel and his cronies said that the DR is immune from the world wide recession. After all the DR economic indicators show the the DR is moving steadily forward.

Rcardolito your PLD take on all of this please?

Lopez, it is not simply a matter of corruption. you have to add imcompetence into the mix. for years, reports have been coming out about the government´s committment to competitiveness. sadly, the condition worsens. it is a case of the heart being willing, but the flesh being weak. too many bungling incompetents run the show, line their pockets, and destroy the country. as the General, Generoso, says, get out while you can, if you are an investor. the bubble is going to burst, real soon. it is just getting larger, and, when it reaches full spherical shimmer, it will explode with verve and panache. the schrapnel will spare only the politically connected, their relatives, friends, and assorted concubines. you might not fall under that umbrella, so you best seek to cover your miscellaneous asses.

This is just a by product of what our corrupt government is doing to the country. Kind of hard for any foreign businesses to come here when they find out you only get about 7 hours a day of electricity and the rest you have to make on your own. I tell this to people who own and run real corporations and they find it hard to believe in this day and age. This is a major reason why anything not agricultural has a difficult time in the DR. No business that requires electricity is going to be able to survive in the DR and turn a profit compared to nearly any other country they could move that factory to. Mexico and India are far better choices with competitive labor rates and better infrastructure.

Well, unless you want to run out and leave the nation the only thing to do is take the strong medicine that this disquieting report makes clear and foment actions to get the nation out of this abyss. I like the Pavlovian mechanism being used to get the DR to do the right thing and I hope it continues. All these international ranking reports serve a good end: they make all take note of the incompetence and inefficiencies that abound in the DR. Again, will this lead to positive change? We don't know, but at least we have some standards on which to base our assumptions. Now the government and the PEOPLE need to make the necessary adjustments to move the nation and state towards better outcomes. For those who bridle at international trade agreements and all, this report is in part an outgrowth of DR's ever greater entanglement with modernizing trends. Unlike in the past when there were few if any adequate statistics to measure DR with other nations, now we have better stats.

I see that a lot of the comments here are negative...this pecimestic attitude won't help, one of the reasons for the above poor ranking was the available public data (or lack of).

Many are saying the bubble will burst, well for the rest of the planet the bubble has BURST in the biggest way possible, I come form Europe, Ireland to be precise where we were ranked one of the most expencive countries on the planet, now a lot have lost or are loosing their homes and jobs are leaving the country every day.

I moved companies (as an engineer) to RD a few years ago around the time the bubble was bursting, I lived in the RD for 3 years where I saw all the benifits that Dominican Rep has to offer.

Granted the electricy issue is there but for a company to be competitive a generator system would be an insignifican cost relatively speaking.

Dom Rep has an excellent Educated and keen work force, continualy improving, a truly untapped benifit to any company.

Things can only get better

The million dollar question here it is.

have all the guys here making negative comments have actually read the report?

I suggest you do so before speaking because just about every country in the Americas drop anywhere from 4-6 spots down so the ones going up in the list must be in another part of the world and not in the Americas.

Good to hear some positive news. But Bartman_Bueno, the report is actually a good thing: it provides a picture of economic competitiveness in time. Of course, anyone who has tried to look at the DR knows that good stats are very difficult to come across. And this is in large measure a reflection of DR's relative isolation and immaturity as a nation-state. Back in 1966 when Balaguer was offered a chance to integrate the DR into the Export-Led-Growth model, and he refused, the DR had an opportunity to finally realize a significant movement towards modernity and a strong statistical development in all its economic activities. Modern accounting systems would have by necessity have made its way into the DR because the trading system would have demanded such developments. But Balaguer didn't take the leap and the DR is now playing catch-up. So, yes its a bitter pill, but I say better to know where you stand than to play not knowing your relative position. Now on to the tasks!

Juan,

Excellent point. When the news is bad some people will just point to another person, another place or another time in order to attempt a comparative justification for their condition. The reason people here have been negative is because that is the way logical people interpret negative news. So now that the situation is known, proper initiatives should be followed to help curtail the situation, saying that Johnny's productivity also went down does not help you correct the problem. Taking ownership of the shortcomings and making the appropriate corrections is the way to change the current realities. How about fixing the problems by putting the egos and pride aside.

You missed the point here. I never said it was good but you took it that and ran with it. I said clearly this is a general problem in the "Americas" and who ever is going up the list is not anywhere around us. Why is this happening in the Americas is the better question to ask and should we be looking for a better model to follow somewhere else. The problem with most of the negative news here is that people just make a negative comment and leave it there. Personally I much rather study the problem and see if there are solutions close by because by simply complaining nothing gets accomplish or understood. If everybody on your team is failing and the other team is winning then my logical way of doing things is to learn from the winning team instead of seating around the loosing thing complaining why we can't win. get it? by the way there are 195 countries not 139 as you think!

Agreed, devin11.

I think most of us who seek some silver lining in what's going on in DR today should view this as what it is: a call to improve. But remember, as I've stated before, these measurements and studies are a direct outcome of DR's participation in trade agreements/organizations. Slowly DR's stats will give us a better lens to view her good points and negative points. All this is a necessary good because one has to know where one stands before targeting the areas of concern. Certainly DR has many areas that need attention and improvement. AS DR introduces more agreements and institutionalizes modernization its ugly underside will of course be shown for all to see; perhaps this illumination might finally get the elite to get serious about implementing the changes needed to make DR a better nation and state. Perhaps.

Atabey,

Thanks for the link to the actual report. It's very interesting and enlightening. It does not support the strongly negative and not very constructive comments of many posters here. The DR has some clear strengths and weaknesses and it's a good guide for future efforts. The country has made a lot of progress in some areas, but still has far to go in others. This is true of all developing countries.

No problem,

I just want better stats on DR in all areas of life; then we can have a far better understanding of what's going on. And we all should at least knowledge that this statistical outgrowth has occurred under the LF Administration. Be it forced upon him by the international organizations or not, the facts are that finally DR is getting a statistical profile that will make comparisons easier and Hopefully more meaningful than ever in her history. When is the National Census taking place?
