SANTO DOMINGO. - The authorities extradited to the United States a Dominican nationalized American, on charges of trafficking people to that country, the Antinarcotics Agency (DNCD) announced Tuesday.

Jorge A. Torres Puello, 32, requested in extradition by the US authorities, was escorted to the Las Americas International Airport by DNCD agents, who handed him over to U.S. Marshalls. They left at 12:40 p.m. Monday aboard Delta Airline flight 494 to New York, to be processed by the United States District Court in Belmont.

Torres had also provided legal advice to 10 American Baptists accused of kidnapping 33 Haitian children after the January 12 quake.

The Dominican Republic is a GREAT COUNTRY. With a large population, and just as any other country on Earth, there are some bad apples. HOWEVER, it is N O T a corrupt society, it has NEVER been. On the contrary, we are very hard working, honest, caring, happy, people.

You may think that Domincians are not corrupt but for a small population of 9-10 million it is extremely corrupt.

Well . . . . .I am not corrupt. My family is not corrupt, nor my friends. Sometimes when people have something personal against others, they tend to generalize and paint all the others with the same brush. Below are some interesting stats:

Seventy-one countries - nearly half - score below three, indicating that corruption is perceived as rampant. Haiti has the lowest score at 1.8; Guinea, Iraq and Myanmar share the penultimate slot, each with a score of 1.9. Finland, Iceland and New Zealand share the top score of 9.6.

Countries with a significant worsening in perceived levels of corruption include: Brazil, Cuba, Israel, Jordan, Laos, Seychelles, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia and the United States. Countries with a significant improvement in perceived levels of corruption include: Algeria, Czech Republic, India, Japan, Latvia, Lebanon, Mauritius, Paraguay, Slovenia, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uruguay.

The level of corruption in the DR is not unique. Corruption is a worldwide problem, especially in societies that are changing and developing rapidly. Once change and development reaches a plateau, people have a chance to tidy things up.

Jimharrington, you are talking through your backside. Pro rata, the corruption in the DR is a drop in the ocean compared to the U.S. Look at your history, especially with the banks etc. There are prosecutions going on in the UK against some of them. The High Court Justices even gave a press release about the corruption and said they will no longer be quiet as the American Government has tried to shut them and the media up for too long about the truth about what goes on there. The American people never see the truth reported in their press, it is controlled, including facts about 9/11

I have lived and worked in many countries and yes there is corruption here like many countries, but it is minor compared to others and on the whole, I think it is one of the best countries in the world to live in and the Dominican people are the nicest and friendliest. Many expats have money problems here now and they are helped by Dominicans.

I applaud Leonel's efforts to clean up the corruption and I am sick and tired of you people that live in other countries and some that live here that don't know the true workings of this country, posting on here snide remarks about it.

and a added note
Last year a survey was conducted world wide as to which country was the best to live in and the D.R. was number 4 on the list.

So many expats want residency here now that the residency laws have been changed and it is a lot tougher to get it now. Some countries are on the banned list.

"a jew ..." ??? Actually a Dominican Jewish-wannabe. But, by all means, don't let the facts stand in the way of some good old fashioned hate.

This idiots biggest crime was voluntarily putting himself in front of the cameras while there was a warrant out for him in the US. Remember that the US and NGOs call the illegal immigration business "trafficking". Often sounds worse than it is.
