SANTO DOMINGO. - Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET) director Jose Sanz Jiminián announced Tuesday that movable speed bumps will be placed in the Capital’s major arteries at night, to prevent the car races which have claimed the lives of several pedestrians in the last few years.
He said starting 11 p.m. the speed bumps will be placed in the Lincoln, Churchill, Luperón avenues among others, which he affirms are used for auto competitions.
The official also asked citizens to notify Amet of other streets used for car racing.

In another topic Sanz donated helmets and reflector vests to dozens of moto-taxi drivers and said Amet will reach an agreement with them to put an end to the inconveniences.
The official made the announcement during a meeting with the associations of moto-taxi drivers Federation, after complaints of heated confrontations with Amet agents.
He said of the more than 2.0 million motorists in the country, only 1.8 million are legally registered.

There is NO MONEY for anything other than to steal, and even the thieves are complaining that there isn't enough. How could we possibly afford more police?

How about they focus on fixing the red lights and make people comply with the basic traffic rules, like not passing in red, stopping at intersections and not driving on the wrong direction... It's ridiculous the current status of the traffic in Santo Domingo.

Speed Bumps!!!! How about telling the traffic cop to do his/her job and enforce the law. They can't be hanging out at the carwash allnite. Bytheway, if you leave those portable speed bumps unattended, they are liable to grow legs and walk away and will cost the country monies (god only knows how much are they being billed for). I' sure someone will find 101 ways to make those speed bumps usefull. The AMET will use a contractor to lay them($$$) out and the contractor will have some one steel them($$$).....While the AMET make-out with eachother under the overpass Leo built for them to take breaks.
Sanz should just give the protectivewear and shut-up, how dare anyone say that rules were made to be broken. No ecceptions!!!!! Have the employees pay these motorist enough to buy equipment. Bill the employees. the AMET didn't ask for the help , I'm sure of it.
Not only is the island lacking education, it also lacks commonsense.

The "hot part" would be Lincoln, between Malecon and Kennedy.
I can't believe they cannot control that with regular police, radios, and interceptor bikes. Fueled up of course.
I'm sure there's a big export market for portable speedbumps.

I think it5 is a good first start,,,,and how about permanent speed bumps on Duarte going south to Mercedes....the guaguas and taxies go very very fast down this stretch, and schools near the bottom of Duarte, with these idiot drivers going as fast as possible..

You wonder what is their thinking process ! The DiarioLibre online edition of today, Sept 15, adds that AMET director Jiminián will have the members of AMET monitor the speed bumps after they are in place every day after 11pm. Why can't he save the purchase price of the speed bumps and just have the AMET members do what they are supposed to do, monitor the road for speeders.
