Anthony, Noris Bernal. File
Santo Domingo.- The Body Shop Athletic Club yesterday clarified that the information by the Office of the Electric System Prosecutor (PGASE), that the company has an illegal electrical connection was an error.
In a statement sent to news source diarilibre.com, the gym’s executives ask the PGASE to accurately explains the article published last Friday, where it hints that their company had committed electrical fraud.
Body Shop president Anthony Bernal annexed a letter by the Electricity Superintendence, which clarifies that the bad connection was an error by EdeSur technicians and not fraud by Body Shop. “It’s imperative that we publicly clarify that situation because we’re a company that has been characterized with compliance of all our fiscal, economic, and moral obligations."
Last week PGASE had reported an alleged electrical fraud of more than RD$4.0 million, which included Body Shop.

I have met Anthony Bernal on more than one occasion and know people who have done business with him.
If you look up the phrase Douche-bag you will find his picture next to the entry.

Possible honest error. Although if I were an owner/manager of a business whose electric bill was extraordinarialy low, say $2,500/mo for example. I would know something was not right., if for the same period, my residential electric bill were $4500/mo (for example). Just knowing your bill was in error, you are committing fraud, if you never make any logical honest attemp to have it corrected.
Same goes for a supermarket cashier, who gives you the wrong change at checkout, say $500 more than the correct change. If you are aware that it is the incorrect amount, you should be honorable and return it. Most good people would. Many dominicans would NOT !

juango,
You are correct. The owner should have known that the bill was low

Again, use the momentum these cases allow for the needed changes that will finally see us through this perennial outrageous situation concerning our electrical practices. Everyone who uses needs to pay-up. And as with Martha Steward, the government needs to make a Mountain out of this to enact the needed changes. The "little people" will continue to defy standards if they think that the well heeled crowd does so, and sometimes with impunity. I hope the World Bank makes it Loud and Clear to this crowd, the old ways are out,, start living a more honest and principled life. It's "only" your nation's reputation and stability that's at stake!

Sounds like BS to me. Most influential and powerful families in DR are above the law, and act like the rules never apply to them, and this is just one example. This perk system or good old boys network, has been in force for years, setting a bad example for the up and coming generation, that also want to be teflon coated, or above the law, and beyond any rules, just like their parents where.
The society as a whole has moral values that only fit their particular needs, if they can get away with something, they will. If they are caught they will deny, deny. deny, until their faces turn red.
That is why it is OK to steal from the government, drive like you own the streets, commit adultery, drink habitually, shoot your gun up in the air, pay as little as possible and abuse your loyal employees, and last but not least, lie with a straight face and blame others.

Wasn't there recently an article on Dominican Today saying it is the wealthy in this country who steal the most electricity? Somehow I doubt that anything will be done to this man. His money and connections will smooth everything over. If the people who can afford to pay their bills don't, why do we expect the poor to pay theirs?
