SANTO DOMINGO. - The United States Congress approved five million dollars in funds for the Dominican Republic for the next fiscal year, to October 2011, within the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI).
The initiative aims to bolster regional cooperation on security that includes US$45 million for Caribbean nations including the Dominican Republic.
Barack Obama’s Administration has requested 79 million dollars to continue supporting the CBSI during 2011, whose main objectives include a considerable reduction of drug trafficking, increase public safety and to protect and promote social justice.
Dominican Republic’s five million dollars will be used in complementary programs such as alternative education for youth, including flexible learning models and literacy campaigns; basic vocational training and tools for workers in the areas of tourism, agriculture and informatics for youth at risk.
Moreover the funds will serve for evaluations in all regions to improve ongoing programs for first time offenders and for youth at risk, good governance and anti-corruption programs, community policies and the education of youngsters.
