NEW YORK.- President Leonel Fernandez met with Palestine Authority president Mahmoud Abbas Monday night as part of the United Nations General Assembly, a gathering in which they discussed the Middle East peace process.

Fernandez, who’s the first Dominican chief executive to meet with a Palestinian par, invited Abbas to the Dominican Republic, according to a statement issued by the National Palace.

The Head of State told Abbas of his Government’s interest so the Palestine community in Dominican Republic can participate in discussions around the Middle East conflict and to bring that part of the world closer to the Caribbean.

Abbas thanked Fernandez for opening a diplomatic office with the concurrent ambassador Gabriela Bonetti.

Great! That's all we needed. Anything for a buck.

Next on the list: Afghanistan, North Korea and Darfour.

LF is just doing his small part in helping out the US and European initiative to integrate the Palestinian Nation into the world community. Remember, any DR President worth his salt has to engage the world, the days of yore are very far indeed. DR has to play the modern game and this opening, while small and seemingly insignificant may at some point lead to business deals for the DR.

The DR has a sizable Palestinian community. Relations would be natural. Must everything be viewed so cynically?

Is the president going to offer Mr. Abbas a glass of tap water or what. With all due respect this country is going to hell in a hand basket and Middle East peace should be the last thing on the presidents mind.
Lets try no water system, children dieing from bug bites, not to mention basic corruption.

with his own country falling to pieces, LF leaves for the 14th time in twelve months to solve the rest of the world's problems. If anyone listens to this nut, they should receive free time in a looney bin. Another DR joke, right?
