Santo Domingo.– Authorities sentenced fiive teenagers to three to five years in prison after finding them guilty of killing seven taxi drivers and seriously injuring two others by forcing most of them to drink drain cleaner.

The teenagers, who ranged in ages from 15 to 17 and included two girls, used guns to assault the drivers in April and steal money from them. Two of the drivers were fatally shot and the others were forced to drink drain cleaner.

Authorities said the teens also doused the bodies with drain cleaner to prevent them from being identified. The victims' relatives had demanded the five be treated as adults and serve up to 30 years in prison, the maximum penalty allowed.

This is nothing more than a slap on their wrists. This mild response by the judicial to a horrendous act by the youths sends a bad message to the community. The decision does not serve as a deterrent, only invites more crime.

Yes very ashamed. I would advise everyone to stop going to dr and the foreigners that live there to move out. I myself don't plan on going there anytime soon. Things are just getting worse by the day. the government has no will to fight drugs and crime.

Hopefully the families of the slain taxi drivers take justice into their own hands and hunt this criminals down and shoot them one by one. If the goverment cannot protect its citizens than they should take matters into their own hands.

AnthonyT, the cultural dynamics of the DR will eventually come into play, and the families of these taxi drivers will exact revenge. time is a river. these families will not forget. they will wait until these rodents serve their time, and wipe them out, one by one. you can take that to the bank. they are dead scum walking.

I really can't believe this, it sounds completely implausible. Three to five years for the commission of these murderous and torture laden acts is reprehensible to the worth of human life. I make no criticism as to the heinous criminal nature and participants of these acts within Dominican society at large, these barbarous acts can happen anywhere. My criticism and embarrassment lie in a judiciary and the existing legal apparatus that permits such a disaffected sentencing result. Human life is precious even if the Dominican Government doesn't place this value upon it's very own people.

What do you expect from a country where a President hands out pardons for campagin contributions and a useless judicial system.

Someone should look into if any of these convicted murderers has a relative in the PLD or senate.

Dominican justice is a mirror image of Dominican society. Look at yourself Dominican Republic, you are a FAILED STATE. There are many examples of such outlandish cases in thhe past 10 years. Why would anyone want to visit, live or invest in such a place. Bring back the Iron Fist of El Jefe (ie: a Sadam Hussain/Trujillo) and restore honor to a dying country. The only thing Dominicans respect is fear and intimidation, so bring it on ! There is no longer respect for one's freedom at present.

Is there something missing to this story?
Grotesque and sadistic murders of multiple victims and these pieces of garbage teenagers get
3-5 years?
As an American friend, investor, businessman and part-time resident of the DR for over 25 years, I am horrified at what is happening to this once beautiful land.
The utter lack of morality at all levels, the absence of any honor or justice and the total meltdown and corruption of proper values will be fatal to this country.
Must I have an armed guard with me just to go to Jumbo? To travel to the capital, should I drive my bullet proof Humvee.
And if I do experience any trouble, who do I call that I could trust.

All that will be left in this once glorious land with be vermin feeding on each other.....the innocents will either flee or perish in the crossfire.

Adios, mi tierra.

3-5 yrs for 7 murders, torture and robbery. What the @$$# is wrong with the Dominican justice system ? That isn't justice . It's spitting in the face of the victims and their survivors !
By all means, treat juveniles with a gentler hand than an adult but these "children" don't deserve that kind of mercy. The poor cab drivers suffered agony at the hands of these youthful monsters and now their families are suffering at the hands of an uncaring state. Pitiful.

What justice system? This vermin should be made to drink the same cocktail that they gave these unfortunate working men. Then set them free.

This is a f*uking joke right?
No way they only got 3 to 5 for this barbarous act..
This has got to be a fu*king joke..

If this is the way the country is going..
Don't be surprised when you see vigilantly justice spring up all over the place.
I saw a knucklehead try to steal a pasola near where I live in Puerto Plata.
The people chased him down and beat him to death right there on the spot with rocks and sticks.
One lone police officer tried to save him but couldn't back the people off of the knucklehead.

Yes, I agree these a$$holes are walking dead.
Maybe before they get out.

Not to worry! These sick (kids?) will get what they deserve in prison.
None will walk out.

Dread,
I'm with you on this, I've seen it. At the entrance to Bahia Luperon is a newly named spot "Dead man's Hill" where a guy's people paid off the prison to get him out, then 'they', 'took him out' and left him up there in view of the yachts in the harbour. I believe his "number" came up.
Time is a river....

Cut the kids a break, they live in a country that fosters this kind of conduct. Where are the parents at in the lives of these kids, something went wrong and much of the blame lives with the parents and the dominican culture that leads poor kids like this to commit such a senseless crime. More things need to be done to provide a better future for Dominican youths, This is really a shame, I feel just as bad for these youths as I do for the families of their victims. There are no winners here.

B.....cut the "kids" a break? Are you joking?
They committed several horrific murders and you place blame elsewhere?
OK, maybe bad parenting and a society are involved....but read the story!!!
It wasn't just armed robbery. It was armed robbery and first degree murder of 7 innocents by almost torture.
Bring back the death penalty and put it on tv during a commercial break in the major league baseball playoff.

The judge gets full blame for allowing that mockery of a ruling , the fact there only doing 5 years of jail time is a slap in the face to the victims family. jail time in dr is no picnic , but those savages should be doing a 100 years in the slammer making licenced plates for the rest of there lifes.

I totally disagree with this statement.
It doesn't matter where you come from or what's your circumstances.
This barbaric act by these thoroughly criminal minded youth was repeated seven (7) times.

They deserve to be remove from society permanently by incarceration or execution.
These crimes cannot be blamed on anyone but the perpetrators.
They knew exactly what they were doing.

It is further apparent they have no remorse for their carnage.
Seven (7) torturous murders and we should cut them a break?
Maybe you are related to that “judge” who should be immediately removed from the bench.

The wrong messages are being sent to our youth.
There isn’t a consequence for inappropriate actions in this society.
No I do not agree they need to be given a break.
