Santo Domingo.- Monday’s announcement that president Leonel Fernandez had decided to send Dominican soldiers to Haiti drew the expected rebukes on Tuesday by several sectors, who cited historical reasons to oppose the controversial measure.

Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez said he disagrees with the deployment because of the differences the two countries have had historically.

The prelate, speaking after a mass to mark International Childhood Rights Day, called it a “provocation” and cited “historic problems” between the two peoples to oppose sending Dominican soldiers to Haiti  “I don’t agree with sending Dominican soldiers to Haiti, let other countries which don’t have the historical antecedents we have do that.”

The famed attorney Vinicio Castillo Seman also voiced his rebuke to the deployment of the troops for street patrols of the UN Haiti Peacekeeping Mission known MINUSTAH, calling it “madness” and would place Dominican soldiers at risk.

We all know Haitians hAte Dominicans. Especially those uneducated Haitians that don't know about the DR. I hope the soldiers are not provoked by them.

The beginning of the unification of the Island.
Leonel is being persuaded by his interest and others to unify the island, so that he will become the supreme saviour.

Why do you think tricky Billy( clinton) is so interested in Haiti?
There are gold reserves there, that no one has ever exploited one of the last few virgin terrains the US has not gotten their hands on.

there you go, I wonder what they will call the island when its unified?

Its actually crazy that some people continue to be ignorant and have this hatred against Haitians. As Dominicans we should recognize that essentially we came from the same background and we are no better. Instead we should seek to help out the people who we are sharing this island with instead of continuing to perpetuate stereotypes. I dont think that Leonel should be sending troops over because that does have a negative historically based impact. He should consider using resources to educate his people instead.

Don't come, we don't think you need a troubled Island now and you coming will be simply fire in both sides of the island and you guys know tthat. Stop this stupid ambition that will affect your tourism industry. The price for you will be too high in hate and casualties

LOL so if we go there to try and quell the problems on their turf they cite historical reasons but when we complain about millions of illegals they basically throw on us we're supposed to turn the other cheek.

This program stopped being remotely funny a long time ago.

You ae telling me that after all of the talks of sending Dominican Troops after the earthquake is now they are thinking of sending them. As much help as Haitians still need, I think sending the troops now is a bit too late. If they would have been sent after the earthquake, it would have been more justified. Even many Haitians on this forum were saying "We will welcome DR troops as they know they will come to help" But if the troops were not sent then, why now? Although, let's be serious, right after the earthquake there was a small DR military presence in Haiti as reported by CNN. So "officially" the troops are not there, but the fact is, they come and go now as is..

@ IronThinker- in 2005 as things were heating up for Aristide to leave Haiti I heard a comment made to Ted Koppel of Night Line by a Republican Senator " If Haiti can get its act together it can become the Hong Kong of the caribbean" That remark always stuck with me . No one for sure can say what is the US interest in Haiti for they have given their nod of approval for every military coup in that country, I doubt it is simply a matter of sphere of influence, The size and cost of their new embassy in Tabarre definitely makes one wonder what is really at play here. One of the main reasons Aristide fell out of favor with Washington is because he could not deliver on none of the neo-liberalism economic agreements accords he signed with the US on the night before he was to returned to Haiti with his Marines escorts in 1993. Your observations are correct Sir,

We can send Leonel to Haiti after this term .They will probably lynch him there!

As far as Haiti becoming a "Hong Kong" the main raw material in a nation is people and their culture and a band of mainly illiterate uncultured peasants with a small narcissistic elite will do well to be able to feed its people but Haitian illusions of grandeur always smack into the wall of reality.

Leonel is a complete idiot with no sense of nation and should be removed ASAP!

Believe me, the majority of us Haitians would rather see Dominican soldiers on our streets than U.N soldiers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc. We have absolutely nothing in common with those people. I personally have countless of Dominican friends, nieces and nephews, in-laws.... The reason why the U.N is doing all it can to integrate some Dominican soldiers among them is because their days are being counted, they are trying all they can to make the U.N more appealling to the Haitian people. I can guarantee you that the U.N troops will not be in Haiti this time next year.

@ Pepe

I do believe what the Senator was referring to was the Made in Hong Kong label which preceded the made in China label (hard working source of cheap labor for manufacture goods). I do believe he has full access to studies done by their conservative think tanks on these issues and therefore have a greater understanding on this subject than someone who is simply blinded by ignorance, and self hatred.

There most be a way for Haiti and Dominican Republic to live together. but you have to be extremely careful to send the military to the streets. They are not trained to "deal" with people.

That's the issue going on with US soldiers.
