BARAHONA, Dominican Republic.- Six local merchants who went to Haiti via the western border crossing at Jimaní to sell merchandise last week have been allegedly kidnapped by a group of armed Haitians in Jacmel.

Four of the six have been identified as José Antonio Cuevas, Anderson Féliz Heredia, Julio Alejandro Batista and Amalfi Alba Acosta, the first three residents of the barrio Canta la Rana, and the latter of La Cañada de Papoy.

Heredia’s mother Marcia revealed the alleged kidnapping, and said she had called her son by cell phone and was told that while in Jacmel, the Haitians took them to an undisclosed location and demand a high ransom for their release.

She said Cuevas had traveled to Haiti on business and nothing like that had ever occurred before. "Like me, the other retailers’ relatives are worried because we don’t know their whereabouts and their physical conditions." She asks the Dominican and Haitian authorities to investigate.

South Regional Police spokesman Jose D. Perez said an investigation has begun to establish the alleged kidnapping’s veracity.

Everyday occurrence in Haiti. The kidnappers just want some dollars, so they shouldn't be hard to get back if the ransom is paid. We have to get more details of the case, including the veracity of the affirmations of the mother, as it is suspicious that the son received a cell phone call while in custody.

Statistics are only valid in countries that have some sort of structure set up. The Haitian government doesn't even know how many people are in the country ,cannot even provide documents to all its people and has a mainly illiterate population so any statistics on Haiti are based on pure speculation.
Anyhow, anyone stupid or greedy enough to enter Haiti enters at their own risk especially since the only real institution is the UN which was true before the earthquake and is only more true now.

Well put. Statistics surveys can be manipulated to suit anyones need. We all know at the end of the day the mass media only reports on what sells. Kidnappings happen everywhere its not unique to haiti.
