Santo Domingo.- Chamber of Deputies president Abel Martinez said on Friday that he’s in favor of reducing the tax exemptions provided for the lawmakers to import one vehicle every two years free of import duties.

He said the Chamber studies a bill introduced by the San Cristóbal senator Tommy Galan, aimed at placing a ceiling on the value of the vehicle the legislators bring via the exemptions. “I believe that it’s an interesting bill that we must take into account and with that would regulate that sometimes the legislator yields an exemption and uses it to bring a vehicle and evade taxes regarding the amount.”

Interviewed on Latina Antena, Channel 7, Martinez revealed that although the information has not arrived in the Chamber, he believes that a ceiling of 50,000 or 100,000 dollars will be placed on the vehicles the legislators import.

He said he’ll propose that the legislators receive two exemptions during the term of six years and not three as expected.

The national director of the Department of Persecution of Administrative Corruption, Hotoniel Bonilla, said that the justice system was not made to punish corrupt politicians, because in the last 10 years, there has been RD$104 billion embezzled in the principle corruption cases.

"The State of Law that we supposedly conceived in the Constitution has an original mistake, and that is that the citizens of this country are not all equal, not even we officials are all equal", he said.

Bonilla based his criteria on what he has been able to see over his six years at the DPCA.

"When we send an official to the tribunals of the Republic, if he is of a lower rank, the evidence is sufficient, the appeals are declared inadmissible and he serves his time".

Nonetheless, the assistant Attorney General warned that "when the officials are among the powerful, there is no way to convict them".

With the average ownership of a vehicle in North America of 6 years, why would you need a new one (IMPORTED) every 2nd year?

It is obvious that this is really a country of the people and the power. The power gets it all. The people get bad roads, bad police, bad military, bad electricity...and every 4 years...a free frozen chicken.

OK...second part...what is the cap on the value of the vehicle? What...no cap??? Incredible!

Welcome to the land of stupidity. Our corrupt politicians who are among the richest in the country need a law allowing them to import a car tax free every two years? Anyone with a brain knows this is a horrible law and very unfair. No person should have different laws and rules than anyone else. Corruption is our biggest hurdle to overcome.

Where is the government spokesman?

Isn't this where he is supposed to salute this legislator for his honesty and clear thinking and to tell us that we are lucky to have such wonderful public servants?

i can understand that if a government department wants to import pool cars, for the general, limited use of its employees, then they should have tax exempt status. but what is so special about some sub illiterate diputado, which makes him, or her, the recipient of such generosity as a tax break to import a maybach every two years? two years? is this country so advanced that it is considered infra dig for its politicians to have to suffer the indignity of driving a two year old car? one of the basic problems which will keep the DR mired in antiquity for the foreseeable future is the medieval rules that it chooses to embrace with such verve and elan. this legislation is an embarrassment that should have been repealed decades ago. but nothing changes, and, so, every four years the chicken merchants get a windfall sale, as aspirants load trucks with poultry with which to buy off the sheep.
