Santo Domingo.– The increase in malaria cases could be linked to the January 12 earthquake in Haiti, Dominican health authorities said Friday.
According to Deputy Health Minister Jose Rodriguez Aybar, there have been 1,644 cases so far this year. That's about 200 more than the average for an entire year.
Dominican Medical Council epidemiologist Clemente Terrero said heavy rains could be a factor. But he also cited an influx of migrants from Haiti, where malaria is more prevalent.
Thousands of Haitians crossed the border after the quake seeking work and shelter, and the incidence is highest near the border.

The major construction projects at Cap Cana, Punta Cana and Bavaro had brought much of it in with Haitian workers during the boom times on the east coast. Now it's the earthquake migration.
Dominican habit of leaving around old tires and other nesting materials never helped either.

It's not the earthquake but the lack of running water that causes an increase of mosquito breeding. if we had constant water in the country people wouldn't need to store water. I've seen neighbors have tanks of water stored for 2 or 3 weeks and when you open it up you can see all the mosquitoes growing, Also the lack of sanitation and advancement on how they clean the streets
Today they cleaned the sewer filters around my way and it was disgusting at least 10 feet of garbage stacked up and 10 feet wide, m;y question is why wait so long to clean up. ADN waits for these type of situations to start a clean up campaign. They should to a course on what we call preventive maintenance.

I fear the lowering of wages for poor domincans more than the maleria the haitians brings... A few cases in the year versus the thousands of dominicans who are forced to immigrate.
Haitians bring nothing positive to the DR....
