Jose Sanz Jiminian, Juan Hubieres...the lines are drawn.

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s top Transit cop is in hot water for seeking to enforce the traffic law, with several legislations lashing out against his recent statement of setting a record in fines levied against the country’s many drivers who unleash chaos on the roads.

From the deputy of northeast Hato Mayor province to the senator for southwestern Peravia, Metropolitan Transit Authority director Jose Sanz Jiminian is the target of an apparent thrust to oust him, even as an increasing number of sectors blast the deterioration of traffic, converted to chaos even beyond rush hour.

But the most vocal criticism came Tuesday from the head of the association of bus owners Fenatrano, Juan Hubieres, now an opposition PRD party deputy for Monte Plata province (northeast), who is known for staging often violent strikes and for which he has earned the tile “Owner of the country,” as the authorities appear unable to curb his criminal actions.

Another lawmaker, PRD party deputy spokesman Nelson Arroyo said Sanz has “converted Amet into a tax collection agency, with the moto-taxis the most jeopardized sector,” in reference to the traffic cops’ recent drive to slap fines on the bikers who drive without helmets, or documents.

Sans, a veteran of the US Army during the Vietnam War, has seen his share of scandal as Police Chief in the turn of the century, but is also credited with making an effort to “throw the book” at the country’s lawless drivers.

So then I guess it is OK to drive any way you want and commit any traffic violation that you care to?

Imagine the nerve of Jiminian. Instructing his agents to enforce the law. How dare he?

As a politician if you try to enforce laws and point out corruption the rest of the lawmakers will be against you. This starts from the top down as we all see since LF does nothing about it and keeps corrupt and drug dealing friends close to him.

More small people governing the Diminutive Republic. The laws are just for show in case anyone asks. And to think that these people get elected.

Law enforcers, lawmakers and lawbreakers up in arms against each other!

Makes a lot of sense Jiminian´s mandate is to get money from fines, as per Prez orders. So, impound the vehicle, sorry, the junk metal on wheels, get the fine and give the lawbreaker his vehicle, I mean his junk back, so the Amet standing on the next corner can also arrest, impound, extort and release.

Dominican public entrepreneurship at work.

Felicidades Sr. Jiminian. Finaly there is a man with balls who tries to execute the law (yes we live in an overregulated country with all kind of imported laws for anything, they just don't get executed).

Motoconchos think that the traffic rules are not valid for them. They would never stop at red light, enter one way streets, carry more people than a vehicle and do harm not only to themselves but also to their guests and the rest of the traffic participants. Bus drivers think they are the kings of the road. How many times have you experienced a huge bus sticking on your backside with high speed trying to make you disappear. The laws are for everybody without exception. We have the choice to obey them or to live in a chaos. There is no other way to control the traffic than by fines.

Mr. Jiminian has definitely the full support of the civilized part of the population, let's see if that is big enough to keep him in his job.

everything is politicised in the Dominican Republic. it is a land of rampaging opportunists, who are more interest in self aggrandisement than progress. so, they will take issue with a guy who is deterring road violations, in order to appear to be the champions of the DOWNTRODDEN, the VICTIMS of law enforcement. just like the government officials who do not prosecute electricity thieves, because they do not want to appear to be the bad guys who oppress the poor.

Go for it, Jiminian! You must be doing something right when "criminals" like Hubieres and a handfull of some dimwitted politicians stage a complaint....You just go on and I am sure 90% och the country is behind you. The silent majority as they say.

The man is taken to task for enforcing the laws ! Why make the laws if they are not going to be enforced AMET is doing what the organization is commissioned to do. Yes, AMET did take in revenue via fines, and some could say it was selective enforcement but the end result is to penalize those who operate outside the law.

Hubieres interests feel they are most threatened by Jiminian, wonder why.

If everyone is going to complain about enforcing traffic laws, then just repeal them all and do away with AMET. But these same a**clowns will be begging for AMET enforcement when some family gets killed on a moto or a child gets run over crossing the streets. I have breaking and startling news for that commie Hubieres, police enforce laws and write tickets.

Now watch Leonel get ready for a 15 day trip to Iceland to avoid doing the right thing and telling Hubieres to simply shut-up. Mark my words about the unexpected trip from Leonel. This has become his pattern of not having to do whats right!

Normally I do not comment on these articles but this demands an exception..
The wild west driving antics in the Dominican Republic has cost the lives of several people I know personally.
One woman I know returning home from work in a van was struck by a CaribTours bus in front of Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata. She was killed instantly leaving behind two small daughters and a young son. That night they were waiting for their mother and she never returned.

Quickly, I know twin young ladies riding in a car with two young men and a young child. All five were killed instantly when a truck came across the road at a high rate of speed and hit them head-on.

I will give my full support to this Chief who has taken the initative to bring this lawlessness under control.
